Darel Lynn Jardine, proud of his pioneer heritage as a great-great-great grandson of the Prophet Brigham Young, passed through the veil into the waiting arms of his son, parents, three siblings and many others on Sunday, April 19, 2020.
Darel was born on September 9, 1948 to Edmund Ellsworth and Roma Jensen Jardine in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was the eighth of 11 siblings and grew up primarily in the small community of Arco, Idaho. Hiking the hills, playing in the canal that ran behind the house, youth sports and other pastimes contributed to a happy childhood. Darel is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Darel attended schools in Arco, Idaho from elementary school through his junior year of high school and was involved in football, basketball and track. At that time his family moved to Logan, Utah and bought a neighborhood grocery store in order to provide residency and income for Darel and his siblings needing a college education. Darel graduated from Logan High School in 1966 and again excelled in sports.
Darel attended Utah State University and graduated with a degree in history in 1970. Just before his college graduation, he met Christi Andrew from Trenton, Utah. They were married in the Logan, Utah Temple on April 2, 1971 for time and eternity.
The young couple made their first home in Elko, Nevada. Darel began at the Nevada Youth Training Center, a state-operated correctional facility. While there, he was group supervisor working with the youth and before resigning had been promoted to assistant head group supervisor in administration where he was responsible for all campus personnel and youth during his shift.
Darel is the proud father of a son, Matthew Darel and a daughter, Kathryn. Darel played an active role with Matt in scouts and sports. He was Matt’s best friend. Kathryn had only to cuddle up to her daddy and bat her eyes and Darel would melt. He was her Papa and she was his “baby girl.”
In 1979 Darel and Christi moved to Price, Utah where they have made their home for over 41 years. For six years they contracted with the State of Utah Division of Youth Corrections. During that time about 35 youth offenders between the ages of 12-17 were adjudicated to reside in their homes.
In January 1985 Darel began a career at Castleview Hospital as the administrative director of the mental health unit. During this time he obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from USU and earned licensure as a social worker. In 1990 he was promoted to director of human resources. Again he went back to school for a degree to enhance his position and earned a masters in human resources administration, also from USU. After brain surgery in 2006 Darel retired from Castleview Hospital and until 2015 worked part time as an aide, primarily with fourth and fifth grade students, at Creekview Elementary, where Christi worked as secretary.
Darel and Christi consciously made a commitment with each other and our Father in Heaven during their courtship to actively serve in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While in Elko he served as elder’s quorum president, in the stake Sunday school presidency, and as an early morning seminary teacher. After moving to Price he served as a Sunday school teacher, Helper Stake clerk, Helper Stake high counselor, and in the ward high priest group leadership. Darel and Christi served together as stake missionaries, family history consultants, sacrament meeting coordinators at the Beehive Home (Good Life Senior Living), and as visiting teaching/home teaching companions for nearly 25 years. In 2017 Darel and Christi were called for 18 months as full-time member and leader support missionaries to serve in the Utah Provo Mission assigned to the Helper Utah Stake.
Darel’s legacy is the kindness, love, and compassion he showed everyone. We are grateful for his example of loving unconditionally and for his gentle spirit.

A word of thanks from Darel’s family — From 1990 to 2020 Darel had about 20 major hospitalizations and surgical procedures, plus numerous outpatient procedures. On January 22, 2020 Darel learned that he had a sarcoma that was advanced and treatment was not a good option. After spending several weeks in hospitals, Darel wanted to be home. We appreciate the visits from many family members and friends who made the long trip to Price and also longtime Price friends (who have become family). Thank you for letting him know how much he meant to you. Darel enjoyed all the reminiscing and being able to feel of your love. We also appreciate the cards and letters sharing memories, love,
