For the fifth consecutive season the Carbon Dinos finished inside the top five at the 3A State Championship Tournament.

The 2019 season was an eventful one for the Carbon Dinos. Opening a massive stroke lead over the regional competition, the Dinos clinched their fifth straight division crown in late September. Bode Salas and fellow freshman Daron Garner contributed top four team scores for most of the second half of the season.

The season came to an end as the Dinos finished third at the 3A State Championship Tournament in Roosevelt on Oct. 3.

Below is the complete recap of each meet, All-State and All-Academic selections as well as off-season news.

July 31, 2019 at Roosevelt:

The Carbon Dinos opened the golf season with a dominating performance as the team earned a 19-stroke victory over the competition in Roosevelt, the site of this year’s 3A State Championship meet.

Fighting off the windy conditions the Dinos combined for a team score of 317, topping second place Richfield’s score of 336. Grand ended in third at 339, followed by Emery in a distant fourth at 398. South Sevier and San Juan rounded out the field of six as both finished with scores in the 400’s.

Nick Olson paced Carbon with an individual score of 77. Fellow senior Brady Gagon was next with a solid 79, followed by Kaden Slavenksy’s 80. Freshman Bode Salas contributed the fourth score as he delivered an 81.

Olson’s 77 put him at the top of the individual leaderboard in a tie with Richfield’s Jaren Anderson. Gagon’s 79 places him in a tie for third with Grand’s Luke Williams. Kaden Slavensky and Bode Salas are currently fifth and sixth.

Aug. 7, 2019 at Richfield:

The Carbon Dinos extended their overall region stroke lead by claiming a five-stroke victory in the second Region 12 meet of the season at the Cove View golf course in Richfield.

Freshman Bode Salas led the way with a 77 as the Dinos ended with a 320 team score. Richfield finished second at 325, followed by Grand with a 328. South Sevier, Emery and San Juan completed the field of six.

Brady Gagon’s 79 helped lift Carbon with the third lowest score of the afternoon. Kaden Slavensky was right behind at 80, while Nick Olson registered the fourth score with an 84.

Individually Gagon and Salas are now currently tied for second, while Richfield’s Jaren Anderson has captured a nine-stroke lead at the top of individual leaderboard. Slavensky and Olson both remain in the top ten.

With two meets now complete in region competition the Dinos now hold a 24-stroke over second place Richfield. Grand trails Richfield by six for second place, while South Sevier, Emery and San Juan all sit in the back half of the region.

Aug. 13, 2019 at Grand:

The Carbon Dinos strengthened their lead at the top of the Region 12 standings by dominating the competition in the third meet of the season Tuesday afternoon at the Moab Golf Club.

Brady Gagon shot a team best 76 to lead the Dinos to a final team score of 311. Grand finished second on their home course with a 329, easily beating Richfield’s 351. Emery ended fourth with a 400, followed by South Sevier’s 409 and San Juan’s 447.

Senior Nick Olson matched his low score of the young season with a 77. Freshman Bode Salas and senior Kaden Slavensky both ended with 79s. The meet marked the first time a team in the region delivered four scores in the 70’s.

Tuesday’s performance gives the Dinos a 48-stroke lead for the top spot overall in the division. Grand has moved into second, followed by Richfield, South Sevier, Emery and San Juan.

Gagon’s 76 is his low round of the season and moves him into first on the individual leaderboard. Gagon opened the season with a 79 in Roosevelt on July 31, before finishing with the same score last week in Richfield.

Aug. 22, 2019 at Emery:

The Carbon Dinos faced adversity for the first time this season, finishing third overall at the fourth Region 12 meet at the Millsite Golf Course in Ferron.

Ending with a total team score of 327, Carbon finished four strokes behind second place Richfield and 10 behind first place Grand. South Sevier shot a 363, topping Emery by 13-strokes on their home course. San Juan completed the field of six with a 403.

Freshman Bode Salas fired a 75, placing him in a second-place tie on the individual leaderboard. Nick Olson was second with a 78, followed by Brady Gagon’s 84. Kaden Slavensky registered the fourth score for the team ending with a 90.

Despite the third place meet finish the Dinos maintain a commanding lead at the top of the divisional standings. While Grand was able to cut into Carbon’s advantage, they still trail by 38-strokes. Carbon also holds a 60-stroke lead over third place Richfield.

Aug. 28, 2019 at South Sevier:

The Carbon Dinos rebounded nicely from a third place finish last week in Emery County with a six-stroke victory at the Cove View Golf Course in Richfield.

Ending with a team score of 324, the Dinos edged out second place Grand’s 330. Richfield finished right behind with a 332, easily topping fourth place South Sevier’s score of 365. Emery and San Juan rounded out the field of six.

Freshman Bode Salas continued to lead the Dinos, this time firing an individual low score of 72. Kaden Slavensky worked as a perfect compliment to Salas with a 77, followed by Nick Olson’s 80. The fourth score went to Jordan Penovich who shot a 90.

The six-stroke victory allows Carbon to increase their overall region lead to 44-strokes with only three meets remaining on the season slate. The Dinos also now carry a 88 shot lead over third place Richfield.

Sept. 4, 2019 at San Juan:

The Carbon Dinos locked up a second place finish in the sixth Region 12 meet of the season at the Hideout Golf Course in Monticello, the homesite of the San Juan Broncos.

Led by freshman Bode Salas, Carbon finished with a 347, falling six strokes back of the Grand Red Devils. Richfield ended third with a 350, followed by Emery. South Sevier and San Juan closed out the field of six.

Salas finished at the top of the individual leaderboard after firing a 77. Kaden Slavenksy was right behind with a 78. Nick Olson’s 91 counted towards the team’s final total, as did Jordan Penovich’s 101.

Despite finishing second the Dinos still maintain a 38-stroke lead in the overall region standings. Grand has created comfortable space ahead of third place Richfield, who has a commanding lead over South Sevier.

Sept. 12, 2019 at Carbon:

Freshman Bode Salas shot a season low 68 to lead the Carbon Dinos to another Region 12 victory at the Carbon Country Club Golf Course in Price.

Competing on their home course for the only time this season, Carbon finished with a final team score of 304. Richfield finished in a distant second with a formidable 329, topping Grand’s 342. Emery finished fourth with a 360, while South Sevier and San Juan completed the field of six.

Senior Kaden Slavensky complimented Salas perfectly, finishing with a 71, the second low score of the afternoon. Fellow senior Nick Olson shot a 77, while freshman Daron Garner recorded Carbon’s fourth score with an 88.

With only one region meet remaining on the 2019 schedule the Dinos have extended their overall lead to 76 strokes. Grand remains ten strokes better than third place Richfield, while only seven strokes separate Emery and South Sevier for fourth place.

Sept. 19, 2019 at Roosevelt (Region Championship):

The Carbon Dinos are now one step closer to a fifth consecutive region championship after finishing first place at the Roosevelt Golf Course.

Entering the second to last meet of the season with a 76-stroke lead over the Grand Red Devils, the Dinos continued to take care of business and add to their advantage. Entering next week’s finale the team will enter with a 78 shot lead.

Freshman Bode Salas shot a 72, continuing his individual dominance, as the Dinos finished with a team score of 329. Grand ended just two strokes behind with a score of 331, followed by Richfield’s 333. South Sevier edged out the Emery Spartans for fourth place by just six strokes with a 389. San Juan closed out the field of six in last.

Senior Kaden Slavensky was second on the team with an 81. Fellow senior Nick Olson delivered the third score with an 85. Freshman Daron Garner again scored inside the top four for Carbon, finishing the afternoon with a 91.

Sept. 23, 2019 at Palisades Golf Course (Region Finale):

A second place tie in the final region competition of the season was more than enough for the Carbon Dinos to clinch its fifth consecutive Region 12 championship at the Palisades Golf course in Sterling.

Holding a monumental 76-stroke over second place Grand entering the final meet, the Dinos ended with a team score of 360, a season-high in 2019. Grand equaled Carbon’s 360, while Richfield finished at the top with a 345. South Sevier, Emery and San Juan completed the field of six.

Freshman Bode Salas again led the Dinos with a low score of 84. Senior Nick Olsen was second with an 87, followed by Jordan Penovich and his 94. Freshman Daron Garner provided the fourth score a 95.

While Carbon struggled, by their own standards in the season finale, the performance closed out the inevitable region championship outcome. Holding a sizable advantage throughout the season, Carbon won six of the nine divisional meets, including a the home competition by 25-strokes on Sept. 12.

Salas capped off an amazing freshman campaign by becoming the top individual golfer in the region. His most notable performance of the season came in the home meet where he shot a season low 68. Olsen and Kaden Slavensky both finished inside the top six, helping Carbon to the division win.

Carbon will now shift their focus to 3A State Championship meet, which will take place Wednesday, Oct. 2 and Thursday, Oct. 3 in Roosevelt. The top two teams from each of the three 3A regions have qualified automatically, while the remaining eight schools will be determined by average meet score.

Oct. 2, 2019 at Roosevelt (State Championship Day One):

Led by freshman Bode Salas, the Carbon Dinos qualified for the second and final day of the 3A State Championship after firing a team score of 346, placing them fourth in the field of 14 at the Roosevelt Golf Course.

Playing in his first State Championship meet, Salas fired a team low 81. Senior Kaden Slavensky helped push the Carbon score with an 84, followed by Nick Olson’s 85. Jordan Penovich and Daron Garner tied for the team’s fourth score at 96.

Morgan captured a commanding 11-stroke lead at the top of the team leaderboard after ended with a score of 317. Sophomore Tanner Telford is currently at the top of the individual overall standings, leading the Trojans with a 70.

Judge Memorial is currently in second with a score of 328. Richfield holds a slight edge over Carbon by just two strokes at 344. Delta trails Carbon by one stroke after a finishing with a 347.

Grand, Manti, Union and Grantsville all survived the first day cut, finishing inside the top nine. The season has come to an end for South Sevier, Juab, Emery, American Leadership Academy and South Summit.

Oct. 3, 2019 at Roosevelt (State Championship Day Two):

The Carbon Dinos wrapped up the 2019 golf season with a third place finish in the 3A State Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Roosevelt Golf Course.

Entering the final day in fifth place, the Dinos shot an overall team score of 327, shaving off 19-strokes from their day-one score. Combining the complete scores Carbon finished with a 673, five shots better than fourth place Richfield.

The Morgan Trojans claimed their second straight 3A State Championship by shooting a blistering 621. At the top of the leaderboard after Wednesday’s initial round, the Trojans shaved 13-strokes off of their score to maintain a comfortable lead. Judge Memorial ended second with a final score of 642.

Carbon freshman Bode Salas delivered a sensational round Thursday afternoon by shooting a 72. Improving his score by nine strokes, Salas ended third overall on the individual leaderboard.

Seniors Kaden Slavensky, Nick Olson and Jordan Penovich all ended with an 85 on Thursday, rounding out Carbon’s score of 327. The 85 for Penovich was an 11-stroke improvement from Wednesday’s outing.

The third place finish marks the fifth consecutive season that Carbon has finished inside the top five at the state tournament. Last year the team finished fifth overall after shooting a 640.

All-State Selections:

Bode Salas, Kaden Slavensky and Nick Olson have been selected to the 3A All-State Team, it was announced by the Utah Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America.

Salas, a freshman, was named to the All-State First team. Helping Carbon to a first place finish in Region 12, Bode fired a team low 153 in the State Championship Round where Carbon placed third in the 3A ranking. Slavensky, a senior, shot a 169 and Olson, also a senior, a 170 in state competition.

State Champion Morgan and runner-up Judge Memorial, both tied for the most first-team selections with three each. Richfield, Grand and Delta each had one representative.

The Utah Section PGA extends the honor of First Team All-State to the top ten golfers in each classification, the next ten are selected to the Second Team, and the next ten after that are selected to Honorable Mention.

The Utah Section of the PGA of America has been actively supporting high school golf for over 25 years. Twenty years ago they developed the Utah High School All-State Golf Program. The All-State Golf selection process is unique among all-state honors programs in that it is all by the numbers. Thirty-five percent of a players best region scores and sixty-five percent of their state championship scores are used to rank each player.

Academic All-State Selections:

Kaden Slavensky and Nicholas Olson were listed among 10 players in 3A for academic excellence in the sport. Slavensky and Olson were key to Carbon’s third place finish this golf season.

For over 25 years the UHSAA has presented the Academic All-State Award to recognize those senior student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. Individuals are selected for this award on the basis of their athletic ability and academic proficiency.

Off-Season News:

After two seasons at the helm, Brett Johnson has resigned as head coach of the Carbon High School golf program. A new head coach has not yet been announced.
