Members of the group Helper’s Flower Power Project recently delivered flowered pots to elderly residents who live within the community. The idea turned into the Blooming Helper Project and was engineered by Sharon Miller who enlisted help from many businesses in the area. She was able to take some time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio about this unique idea.
“I felt like it would be a nice thing to do for the elderly and homebound and disabled, people who can’t get out and get their own flowers because for whatever reason and COVID made that a lot worse. So I actually just kind of brought it up on that Facebook page, Flower Power and I got lots of interest,” said Miller. She had many business owners, as well as residents offer to help bring her idea to life.
Those participating businesses were Sharon’s Early Care & Education, Balance Rock Eatery, Happiness Within, R&A Market, BK Gardens, Liberty Gardens, Sutherlands, Natalee Maynes and Melissa Rogers. “Just all these people came together to put the project together. My husband, bless his heart, spent a whole day, a whole Saturday driving around gathering up supplies with me and helping get everything set up for it,” said Miller. The goal was to plant around 200 pots that would later be delivered. The project was able to fulfill their goal by having many volunteers donate their time to plant each of the pots.
The flower pots were in bright summery colors and held various flowers inside them. The delivery process was quite easy as Miller explains, “Its interesting how many elderly sit on their porches and kind of watch the world go by and I just drove around looking for them. It was such a neat experience to pull up in front of a house where somebody was sitting on the porch and just jump out of the van and go back to the trunk and pull out this thing of flowers and take it over and hand it to them and see the look on there face and see it just brighten their day.” Many of the recipients were overjoyed by the thoughtful gesture and Miller was proud that her idea could bring some happiness to individuals.
