Castle Country Radio had an opportunity to sit down with Carbon County Commissioner Larry Jensen to talk about the future of the old Carbon County Senior Center Building on Carbon Avenue, which currently houses the Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County.
“Well the building that the Boys and Girls Club is in today is a building that the county ended up within 1938 and has owned it for a lot of years. Our insurance company does annual audits on our buildings and this last year they came in and did an inspection of the building and gave us a pretty lengthy list of things that needed to be done to it in order for them to continue to insure us. As we weighed the cost of those improvements, we just can’t justify spending the money there,” explained Commissioner Jensen. In October of last year, the county asked for proposals from the public of anyone who had interest in purchasing the building. There was some interest which required an appraisal to be completed on the building.
“Those appraisals came back, one appraisal came back and was $390,000.00, the other was $410,000.000. So we used the average of those two which is $400,000.00 as a benchmark to dispose of the surplus property,” stated Commissioner Jensen. Again, the county has asked for another round of proposals for purchase which will become due on June 16. The Commissioners will review those proposals at their regular meeting the following day and will determine what will happen with the building.
This is not the only property that the county is looking at as they are currently in the process of reviewing parcels that the county has acquired ownership of over the years. “What we would encourage people to do if they are aware of property that they have interest in let us know where it is and we’ll go through the process of offering those parcels to the public for purchase. About a month ago, we actually sold two parcels that we had had requests from individuals and so there is a process we have to go through in order to dispose of those to make sure that as a commission we aren’t selling those properties at a reduced rate to a buddy, it needs to be available to the public. So people keep an eye out, the advertisements will be in the newspaper as well as on the public notice websites,” said Commissioner Jensen. Interested individuals can contact the Carbon County Clerk for more information.
