The high school golf season is less than three weeks away for the Emery Spartans, who will return the majority of last year’s roster and introduce a new head coach.
“I’m super excited to see the amount of time the kids have put in this summer,” said head coach Kasey Edgehouse, who is entering his first year at the helm. “I’ve had four of my top six kids out here every other day. That alone has provided great improvement.”
Filled with ups and downs throughout the 2019 season, an extremely young Emery High School golf team qualified for the 2019 3A State Championship Tournament after finishing fifth-place in the highly talented Region 12 division. The season came to an end when the Spartans failed to qualify for the second and final day of the state tournament.
The Spartans battled with the middle of the pack within the division throughout most of last season. Underclassmen Trevin Wakefield, Tayven Guymon, Kavery Killpack and Devin Guymon provided the top four scores at most meets during throughout the campaign, bringing optimism into 2020.
The season will open on July 27 at the squad will travel to Morgan. Region play will then begin on Wednesday, Aug. 12. The first trip to an opposing team’s home course will come the following week at Cove View, the homesite for the Richfield Wildcats.
The lone home meet of the season will take place on Thursday, Sept. 24, which also happens to be the final competition before the region championship on Sept. 28. Edgehouse believes his team will hold a distinct advantage late if they can perform early.
“A lot of kids swing a driver on every hole, miss a couple of fairways and you’ll be OK.” said Edgehouse. “You miss the fairway at Millsite and you’ll be hitting out of the desert or dropping. Our kids have learned to work their way around the course and the scores will definitely show.”
Emery will once again share Region 12 with Richfield, San Juan, Carbon, South Sevier and Grand. Last year the division had three teams finish inside the top six at the state tournament.
“I know we have some really good teams in our region and it’ll be tough wherever we go,” said Edgehouse. “We are making sure we compete really well and I think we are going to surprise some people.”
