The Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has been busy with numerous projects that have required volunteers to assist the agency and Conservation Outreach Manager, Aaron Bott took some time to speak with Castle Country Radio about those projects.

Most recently in East Carbon the DWR partnered with the Mule Deer Association for a major project. “We’re going to be working to protect some wildlife habitat up there particularly some wetland areas, some water areas and we’re hoping to conserve that for wildlife use. We’re also going to be working out at East Carbon to fix a guzzler. So a guzzler is a large, basically a basin that wildlife can come and get water from,” said Bott. The Mule Deer Association has graciously provided the DWR with several volunteers to complete the project.

The DWR again has partnered up with a few agencies to work on a huge project up in the Miller Creek area. “We partnered up U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Trout Unlimited and several other groups that are really focusing on repairing that natural habitat. Hopefully, we would like to restore some native fish population up there. It’s one of the coolest projects we got going on in the state, it really is quite exciting to have so many partners invested in this,” stated Bott. The groups are working on installing man made dams to eliminate soil erosion into the springs, they are also planting several Cottonwood and Willow trees in the area as well.

Anglers will be happy to know that fishing is going well around the state but there are a few spots near that are proving to be very good locations to catch that big one as Bott explains, “I almost hate to say it, but those popular areas are popular for a reason. People have been catching a lot of good fish up on Huntington North, up at Scofield and Electric. It’s cool, it’s a great place to go like you said, get out of the heat and the fish our hopping.” Anglers can learn more about fishing by visiting the DWR website at https://wildlife.utah.gov/
