After a long spring without high school sports, the Carbon High Dino football team took to the field on Friday night. Under new coach Phil Howa, and with a roster of more than 70, hopes are high for the season.
In the home opener on Friday night the Dinos struggled offensively and showed flashes on defense, but at the end of the game Carbon came out on the losing end 38-7.
Starting early on, the defense stood strong in the first quarter and half of the second as American Leadership possessed the ball on the Carbon side of the field with the Dino defense yielding just 10 points early.
“Our defense did a great job”, Howa said. “ Taylor Brower called a great defense, you can’t ask a team to do more than that.” Howa went on to add that the offense needs to do their share saying, “I take responsibility for that.”
Offensively the Dinos stayed on the ground for the most part with Cooper Schade running the ball eight times for 49 yards. McKaden Whiteleather also had one rush for 11. Passing numbers for Carbon included a 4/10 performance by Keaton Rich for 28 yards and Whiteleather also passed for six, Autstin Feichko had one reception for 10 yards. Rich also had the Dino’s lone touchdown on a nine yard run.
For American Leadership Hyrum Morely went 9/17 passing for 158 yards and also rushed for 24. Carrying the ball for ALA Manuel Olivares had six rushes for 62 yards and Richard Creviston carried the ball 12 times for 66 yards.
Up next for the Dino’s they will head on the road to take on Cottonwood. The Colts are a team out of 5A, they have had their own struggles winning just one game in the last four years.
“We just get ready and get on the bus”, Howa replied when asked how they would prepare differently for a road game. Also speaking on if they would allow fans in the stands he said he wasn’t sure what Cottonwood’s rules would allow for.”These kids will play with nobody in the stands, they love the game they really do.”
The game against Cottonwood will be played on Friday, August 21. You can listen live on KRPX 95.3 The Peak or stream the action at castlecountryradio.com.
