Kirt Nunley has officially been named head coach of the Carbon High School girl’s softball team, it was announced by school officials Monday afternoon.

Nunley, who has one prior stint as coach of the team, takes over for former coach Wade Williams.

“I missed the sport, it’s that simple,” said Nunley Monday afternoon on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “I had encouragement from a lot of individuals and that meant it was time to come back. I can’t wait for the season to get going.”

Nunley served as the head coach of the program from 2012 through 2015 before resigning from the position. During that time he continued to teach at Carbon High School, where he is now in his 14th year at his position.

Nunley has also rounded out his coaching staff for the upcoming 2021 season. Helping in the dugout will be Butchie Vasquez, who served as an assistant under Williams. Dave Basinger, who was Nunley’s assistant during his first stint, will also join the staff.

“I’m very grateful for these two men, who I know have great knowledge of the game,” said Nunley. “I know I will learn from them. If you can put good varsity assistants under you, it certainly makes you a better coach.”

The softball season is scheduled to begin this spring. Stay tuned to Castle Country Radio for more on the Carbon softball team in the coming weeks as an off-season schedule is put together.
