Despite a competitive first half the Carbon Dinos were unable to keep pace with the Duchesne Eagles in a 53-7 loss Friday night at Carbon High School.

“Duchesne is small, but wow, what an aggressive group of kids,” said head coach Phil Howa following the loss on KRPX 95.3 The Peak. “Our line struggles with fast kids and they are fast, and strong. It was hard to commit to the run and push them down field.”

Trailing 7-0 early in the first quarter, the Dinos tied the game as Keaton Rich connected with McKaden Whiteleather for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The game would remain tied 7-7 heading into the second quarter.

From that point on Duchesne took complete control, scoring 19 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 26-7 advantage into the break. The second half played out in similar fashion as the Eagles added four more touchdowns.

Now 0-3 on the young season the Dinos will shift their focus to Friday’s tilt with independent 3A Judge Memorial, who is also win-less on the season. Last year Carbon easily defeated Judge, walking away with a 50-6 victory.

“We did dominate Judge last year, but things certainly change in a year’s time,” said Howa. “The schedule is not going to get any easier. I have a great group of kids and I’ve told them not to hang their heads. Now I just hope we can get a great week of practice in.”

Friday’s contest against Judge will also represent ‘Senior Night’. Typically saved for the final home game of the season, the team decided to move the event up due to the unknowns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Live coverage of Friday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 6:30 on KRPX 95.3 The Peak. The live feed will also be available on the KRPX radio app.
