There will be a Union Jobs and Career Fair held at the Carbon County Event Center on Saturday, September 26 at 9:00 am till 5:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to learn about the advantages of a union career and acquire information about the various trades associated with a union.
There are many occupations that are related with union careers from symphony members, construction workers, and governmental. “I cover a vast majority of, we actually have 48 different unions in the State of Utah right now,” said President of Utah AFL-CIO, Jeff Worthington. The various unions are a great way to learn a trade as you are a member of the union while working.
“A lot of our different building trades/crafts especially we have an apprenticeship program. This is a fantastic program they’re federally licensed programs so they got the guidelines and mandates of the federal government but once you complete one of our apprenticeship programs you have a federal license that you can use anywhere in the United States,” said Worthington. The beauty of the apprenticeship programs is individuals will begin receiving wages immediately.
“The wages that we are paying to enter into those programs are high wages. They are much higher than any normal McDonalds job or anything like that. You know I will reach out, well I’ll stretch out a little bit and say that its right in that $19.00 to $20.00 range right now,” said Worthington. After a few months on the job then the individual would be eligible for various benefits.
“Then you will pick up our health care benefit package and our retirement benefit package; and every six months you get an incremental raise so we call it a “earn while you learn” program,” said Worthington. It has also been called a “debt free diploma” as you will be learning a trade while getting paid if you are part of the apprentice program.
