The Carbon Dinos wrapped up the golf regular season with a third-place finish Monday afternoon at Round Valley in Morgan.
Despite having three players shoot an 87 or less, the Dinos finished with a final team score of 337. The score placed Carbon ten strokes back of second place Richfield and 21 back of first place Grand. Emery ended fourth with a 342, topping South Sevier by just one stroke. San Juan again finished last with a 402.
“It was a quick turn around playing on Thursday last week and Monday this week,” said head coach Robbie Etzel. “I was impressed with the way the boys came out. We knew Grand was coming for us for second place. I told them they needed to shoot under 340 and they did just that.”
Sophomore Bode Salas put the final touches on his individual region championship by shooting a 72, third overall in the meet. Salas ended the season with a final score of 509, easily defeating second place Wyatt Toney of Grand by 24-strokes.
Salas dominated from the beginning this season, shooting a 69 at Round Valley to open the season back on Aug. 12. His low round of the campaign came on Sept. 3 at home where he shot an impressive 66.
“Bode took a couple of scores this year that I don’t think he was too happy with,” said Etzel. “I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he brings that 509 to the 490s or even lower next season.”
Daron Garner and Brandon Scovill registered the team’s second and third scores as both shot an 87. Kyler Clark was fourth with a 91.
Individually Garner finished tied for 9th overall in the region as he accumulated a final stroke count of 604. Scovill ended 11th with a final count of 620.
With the regular season now complete, the Dinos will have just over a week to prepare for the 3A State Championship Tournament, which is scheduled to take place on Oct. 7 and 8. The two-day finale will take place at Round Valley, a course the team has already played at twice.
“We will play a couple of practice rounds again at Round Valley before the tournament,” said Etzel. “The boys have an opportunity to shoot a 320 every week. We have the talent on the team, now it’s all about keeping those numbers down and playing to our ability.”
