Bob was born in Logan, Utah to Verne and Mildred Ashcroft Smith on February 8, 1952. He attended Logan High School and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in teaching. He met and married Debbie Brinkerhoff in 1978 and together they made their home and started a family in Lawrence. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple on April 16, 1988.

Bob moved to Emery County after graduation to begin his 39-year teaching career. He taught elementary at Green River, Cleveland and Huntington, with most of his years teaching fifth grade at Huntington. He was a lifelong learner and a self-proclaimed expert in marbles. He loved crafting, reading every book he could get his hands on, and will be remembered for his engaging readings of The Hobbit and The Grinch. Later in life, nothing made him happier than spending time with his grandchildren. Watching Will, Nate and Aurora grow into young adults brought him great joy.
