There is always something fun and exciting taking place in Helper so Castle Country Radio caught up with Mayor Lenise Peterman to find out what is happening. She was able to talk about the new Christmas lighting, Wayfinding signage, applying for a flooding grant and the annual trunk or treat event.

There’s a new look to the city’s Main Street as they have been busy having new Christmas lighting installed. “We are so excited to present new Christmas lighting hung by the Christmas light professionals there out of Salt Lake City. They’ve done most of the work, however, they still have Main Street Park Gazebo and a couple of buildings to complete. We expect to see that happen mid-October so we’re super excited and so thankful for the groups that donated to make this happen,” said Mayor Peterman. The groups that donated towards the lighting project were Helper Arts Music and Film Festival, Union Pacific, The Helper Project, Cindi Curry, and Rich Columbo.

The city has been working hard on establishing Wayfinding signs within the city. “So the Wayfinding System was actually developed by USU-Logan their landscape/architecture group when they did the study of Helper last fall developed this concept and did it utilizing Carbon County branding strategy, meaning they used the color palette, the fonts, all of that work and kind of gifted that to us and we were so fortunate to get funding from Utah Power and Light,” said Mayor Peterman. Officials hope to have all the signage up around town within the next few weeks.

City officials have been working on obtaining some grants for projects that have to do with flooding areas within the city.  “We submitted this week a Notice of Intent, which informs FEMA that we are looking to perform a Planning Study of all of Helper and the flooding concerns so that we can develop a strategy to mitigate future flooding events. After, we hopefully secure that funding, we’ll be able to go back to FEMA with priority projects that will help to keep our community safe,” explained Mayor Peterman. City Officials hope to move this initiative forward next year.

The city generally hosts a Trunk or Treat event every year but due to the COVID pandemic the city is going to tweak this year’s event. “This year because of COVID we decided we needed to switch up that strategy to keep people safe. So what we’re going to have is kind of a drive-thru trick or treat and there will be more details coming out as we really flush the idea out. But we’re thinking Saturday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on the 31st. That way the kids will have an opportunity to enjoy Halloween and we can keep everyone safe and healthy,” stated Mayor Peterman.
