Carbon High School sophomore Bode Salas capped off an amazing 2020 season with a 3A State Championship Thursday afternoon at Round Valley in Morgan.
Salas entered the final day of competition tied with Delta senior Jake Henrie after both shot a 69 on Wednesday. Salas created a one-stroke lead entering the final hole of the day, where he added a birdie to clinch the championship with a 71, running his two-day total to 140.
“He headed into 17 knowing that he needed to make a birdie,” said head coach Robbie Etzel. “He took birdies on 17 and 18 to clinch. He went on to hit six of the best consecutive shots I’ve ever witnessed. I’m glad I had the opportunity to be a part of such a historic moment in Carbon High School sports history.”
Emerging as Carbon’s top golfer during his freshman campaign, Salas dominated the Region 12 competition, finishing 26-strokes better than second place Wyatt Toney from Grand.
As a team the Dinos ended tied for 8th overall with a 655. Carbon ended Day One 7th overall with a 333 team score. Despite cutting down one stroke, the Dinos dropped one spot overall on the leaderboard.
Daron Garner delivered the second lowest score for Carbon as shot an 81 Thursday afternoon, running his two-day score to 166. Kyler Clark was third with a 179, followed by Branden Scovill’s 183.
Thursday’s final day of competition brings an end to the 2020 season for Carbon. Locked in a tight battle for the first half of the season with Richfield, the Dinos ended second overall in the Region 12 standings. The second place finish automatically qualified the team for the State Championship.
Friday afternoon head coach Robbie Etzel will join KOAL’s Drive Time Sports on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM to recap the 2020 season. Below are the complete team and individual results for the 3A State Championship Tournament.
