The Emery volleyball squad advanced to the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship Tournament on Saturday defeating the Delta Rabbits at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.

Emery who is sitting at 12-12 overall with a 3-7 region record, owns the No. 8 seed in the state RPI. The No. 9 Rabbits carry a 9-10 record and are 4-6 in Region 14 play.

In a very competitive contest, in which both teams were evenly matched Emery found a way to claim a straight set victory 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19.

Emery will now move on to face the No. 1 team in 3A Union. These two teams have not faced each other all season and their only meeting last season was in the State Tournament as well, with Union taking that match in straight sets 25-10, 25-11 and 25-19.

Union is looking to repeat as State Champions this year. Last year it took them five sets to defeat the No. 2 seed Morgan Trojans 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 15-25 and 19-17. This year in their first round match-up, they defeated the No. 16 San Juan Broncos in straight sets 25-8, 25-11 and 25-18 to advance.

The Spartans will get a change of scenery as the 3A State Championships move to the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

The match against Union is set to begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday October 27th.
