The night is quickly approaching for children in the area to take part in the Halloween trick or treating festivities by dressing up, eating candy and having fun, but Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood wants to make sure that safety is the number one priority on this holiday.

“There will be trick-or-treaters, the governor has come out and said that we’re having Halloween festivities as normal so there will be trick-or-treaters. So I just want to caution the motoring public that Saturday is Halloween and there will be people coming out. I would expect them to start early this year just because of the COVID situation and I’m also thinking that a lot of people will stay in their own neighborhoods and less people will travel so I would expect to see more foot traffic this year than what we normally see,” explained Sheriff Wood. Parents need to be sure to teach their kids to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Always walk on sidewalks or paths, if there are no sidewalks and always walk facing traffic, so that traffic can see individuals walking.

Parents, please remind children to only go to homes that are well lit.  “For little trick-or-treaters out there if you come to a house that no lights are on, there are going to be homes that are worried about COVID and they’re not going to give treats this year, just be respectful of those homes and walk right pass and go to one that decorated and lit,” stated Sheriff Wood. Stay at least six feet away from others who do not live with you. If there is a group at the door, wait till they are done before approaching the door. Adults or older siblings should always accompany any children that are under the age of 12 years old.

The Sheriff’s Office will be out on patrol in some neighborhoods around town.  “The Sheriff’s Office is going to be out like always. There will be four teams on Rhinos in various areas. We’ll have candy with us. So if you see us, let us pull safely over to the curb and come load up we should have some good treats for all the kiddos out there. I’ll be out and it will be fun,” said Sheriff Wood. Parents should emphasize safety rules with their children before going out for the evening.

The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office would like everyone to be safe and enjoy the holiday with friends and family.
