The Emery Spartans played the No. 1 team in the state on day one in the 3A State Championship Tournament on Tuesday night in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center. The Union Cougars entered the top team in the state and showed it taking the contest in straight sets.

Union lived up to the hype taking the first set 25-12, then came back in set number two winning 25-13. The Spartans came out in the third set, but the Cougars were too much taking the final set 25-17 and winning the match.

The loss would drop the Spartans into the consolation bracket where they would face the Richfield Wildcats, a team that they are quite familiar with since both teams play in Region 12. In the two meetings this season the Wildcats came out on top, on the road the Spartans fell 3-2. Then later in the season the Spartans would fall 3-1 at the Spartan Center.

In the second match on Tuesday evening, Richfield came out winning a hotly contested first set 26-24. The Wildcats jumped all over the Spartans in set number two claiming the 25-12 victory. And in the third and final set Richfield took the victory with a 25-23 win.

The Spartans finished the season with a 12-14 record, it was a relatively young roster this season the Spartans will lose just three seniors. Kaymn Childs, Bralin Wilde and Kaejha Johnson will all move on next season and the underclassmen from this season will step up to fill the void.
