A dominant third quarter was all the Carbon Dinos needed as they improved to 4-1 on the season with 64-52 victory over the Union Cougars Monday night in Roosevelt.
Trailing 37-32 at the break, the Dinos outscored the Cougars 15-0 in the third period to capture the lead for good. While the Cougars found their footing in the fourth, it was too late as Carbon maintained control the rest of the way.
The Dinos received a massive boost defensively from senior Keenan Hatch, who recorded 10 blocks, while adjusting plenty more. A catalyst for rim protection during the third quarter, Hatch turned his defensive production into points as he scored 10. His quest for a triple-double fell just short as he gathered eight rebounds.
Senior Preston Condie continued to play efficient basketball on the offensive side of the floor by scoring 24 points on 9-12 shooting. Condie also grabbed five rebounds, handed out three assists and accumulated one steal and one block.
Caleb Winfree also reached double-figures as he poured in 15 points, including two makes from the three point line. Just missing out on a double-double, Winfree dealt eight assists and also snagged five rebounds.
Union guard Grady Gardner ended with 15 points, while center Joey Sampson scored 13 points to go along with five boards.
Monday’s win is the second straight for the Dinos after topping North Sanpete 77-67 at home on Friday night. Playing a heavy four-games-in-six-days stretch, Carbon also earned a win over Delta.
Carbon was originally scheduled to meet North Sevier on Tuesday in Salina, but that contest has been canceled. The scheduling change means the Dinos will next play Friday at home against South Summit.
