The Utah High School Activities Association released the first basketball RPI rankings of the year Monday afternoon.
Grantsville sits at the top of the rankings with a perfect 6-0 record so far this season. The defending 3A State Champion Manti Templars come in at No. 2, followed by Juab at No. 3. Grand and Richfield complete the top five in the initial rankings.
The Carbon Dinos sit inside the top 10 at No. 8 after racing out to a 5-2 start this season. Carbon’s best win so far has come at home against North Sanpete, who is currently 5-3, but ranked No. 6 overall. Most recently the Dinos suffered a one-point loss to No. 3 Juab.
The Emery Spartans are currently No. 14 with a record of 2-5. While the Spartans have lost four consecutive games, the team boasts the sixth highest Opponents Winning Percentage in the classification. This year’s schedule has featured games against 4A Uintah and Juan Diego and top 3A schools Manti and North Sanpete.
Rankings will now be updated at the completion of each regular season game leading up to the final week of region play.
The RPI will be used for seeding come playoff time in February. The No. 12-19 teams will play first round games with teams ranked higher than 12 receiving a first round bye.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
