The Carbon Lady Dinos opened the Region 12 season with a bang, defeating the No. 1 ranked South Sevier Rams 48-35 in Monroe Thursday night.
Entering as the No. 3 team in the classification, the Lady Dinos sent a message early, opening an 18-4 advantage at the end of the opening quarter. The two teams played nearly even the rest of the way, giving Carbon a sizable victory to move to 10-1 overall.
Junior Janzie Jensen shot a highly efficient 50-percent from the field as she posted a game-high 15 points in the win. Jensen’s offensive performance included two makes from the three-point line and three assists.
While Jensen was the only Carbon player to reach double-figures scoring, several others played a key role as South Sevier was held to their lowest point total of the year. Sydney Orth prevented several second chance opportunities as she corralled 16 rebounds, 10 of which came on the defensive glass. Orth also ended with a game best four steals.
Makenna Blanc and Alexandra Cartwright each scored eight points, while Madi Orth finished with seven. A total of seven players contributed at least two points in the victory.
South Sevier standout Presley Chapell was held to just 10 points as South Sevier suffered its second loss of the season. Cassie Johnson ended with eight and Leah Torgerson contributed seven.
Following Tuesday night’s win Carbon has now moved to the No. 1 spot in the latest RPI rankings. The loss dips South Sevier to No. 2 and Richfield remains No.3, despite suffering a loss to Emery on Thursday night.
Carbon will now take the rest of the week off before returning to the court on Thursday to play host to Emery, as both teams will enter 1-0 in region play. Live coverage of the contest will air on KOAL 107.3 FM, 750 AM and KRPX 95.3 The Peak beginning at 6:30 p.m..
