This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines light on the Preschool Program that the district offers. Preschool Coordinator, Beverly Martinez took some time from her busy schedule to share all the details of the Preschool Program.

“We have preschool at Sally Mauro, Creekview, Wellington and Bruin Point. We do charge tuition; the state does not fund preschool so we do charge tuition. It’s $50.00 per month for the three-year old class and $70.00 a month for the four-year old class,” said Martinez. The program is currently gearing up for their enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year. Preschool is open to children ages 3 and 4 years old that live within the Carbon School District.

“This time of year, parents aren’t thinking about preschool yet. But we actually do our full enrollment in March and sometimes I will have parents call in April or May and some of the preschools are full and then they are disappointed that their child didn’t get a slot. So do call me now if you do want a slot in the preschool for next year for your child,” said Martinez. Her office is located inside the Castle Valley Center at 755 North Cedar Hills Drive or she can be reached at (435) 637-9150.

Martinez was able to be apart of a committee to help devise new CORE Standards for preschool and she was eager to speak about it, “A lot of those things are some pre-academic kinds of things that you typically would think of for preschool – like knowing some letters, being able to count. But there’s also a huge component in social competence and how to function as a member of a class, and how to get along with other kids. So preschool spends a lot of time building background knowledge, helping kids develop those social skills that are so critical if you are going to be successful long term.” This allows students to become familiar with the process of going to school, it teaches them that they can accomplish tasks and make decisions without the help of their parents.

The program also offers services to children with disabilities and can arrange for the child to be tested if the parent senses there is a delay in their child’s learning. “We have professional license testing available. I do the testing for developmental delays and then we have speech pathologists who can test for speech and language delays which is often fairly common in young children,” stated Martinez.
