
Trailing by three with less than two minutes to play, the Carbon Lady Dinos finished the game on an 8-0 run to top the Richfield Wildcats 43-38 Tuesday night at home in a Region 12 showdown.
Needing a win to remain in contention for a region championship, Carbon trailed 38-35 with 1:47 to play. Following two free throws by Makenna Blanc, the Lady Dinos trailed by just one. Moments later Carbon captured the lead for good as Madi Orth converted two foul shots with 56 seconds left.
Following two more free throws Carbon’s lead grew to three. The Wildcats had one last chance to tie the game, but Janzie Jensen clinched the victory as she stole the ball from Richfield’s Kate Robinson with just seconds remaining. Jensen then delivered a down court pass to Sydney Orth who scored on a layup as time expired.
Madi Orth finished with a team-high 13 points, two rebounds and two assists to lift Carbon in the much needed victory. Sydney Orth finished with 10 points and five rebounds, while Amaiah Timothy chipped in with seven points off the bench.
Carbon entered Tuesday’s tilt with one loss in Region 12 play, while Richfield was even at 2-2. The win, coupled with an Emery loss to South Sevier, places Carbon in a three-way tie with both teams for first place. The loss drops Richfield to fourth in the division.
Richfield’s Nicole Willardson poured in a game best 18 points as the Wildcats suffered a second consecutive loss. Robinson finished with seven, while Sipola Vakautakakala ended with four.
Tuesday’s contest was the first of three consecutive home games for Carbon, all three coming within the week. Next the Lady Dinos will host the San Juan Broncos on Thursday night.
The week will come to an end when the Lady Dinos welcome in the Grand Red Devils Saturday afternoon in a game that was originally scheduled to take place last Thursday. Tip-off for Saturday’s game is set for 1:15 p.m..
