There is a phone scam making its way around the area and it’s causing many folks to question the calls. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood took time on his weekly update to discuss the latest scam that involves Publisher’s Clearing House.
“So there is a scam and it is the second place prize winner, its one of those deals where they’re going to say look to verify that you are who you say you are send us a gift card from Walmart, and they’ll get you to start sending little things back to them like that. But its one of those deals you got to do something to win something and that’s not legit every time,” stated Sheriff Wood. Residents are asked to be on the look out for this scam and not to fall victim to it. If you feel uncomfortable about the call hang up, contact law enforcement or your banking institution because they are always up to date on the latest scams taking place.
“I’ve gotten a lot with the IRS scam that my social security is on hold and I need to do something or else they are going to arrest me if I don’t, that one is going around a lot right now and it just seems like they’re getting better at what they do, they’re getting more convincing so be very cautious,” said Sheriff Wood. The IRS will never contact a taxpayer on the phone to collect taxes, nor will they ask for payment information. Never feel pressured to make a rash decision, instead, ask for written correspondence or immediately hang up the phone.
We had some snowstorms over the last few days and there is a strong possibility we will see more as the week goes on. “Just drive carefully, you know I think we’re in a, they say atmospheric stream, which is cool to a weather nerd like me. So it looks like we’re going to see a series of storms about every other day or so in our happy neck of the woods, so just be careful. The roads will be a little bit slippery when it snows overnight, and take extra time and get there safe and sound,” said Sheriff Wood.
