The Carbon Dinos used a powerful third quarter effort to overcome a stellar defensive performance from the Richfield Wildcats in a 45-40 win Wednesday night on the road.

Meeting for the first time this season, Carbon and Richfield combined for just 33 points in the first half as the Wildcats claimed a 18-15 lead at the break. The Dinos nearly eclipsed their entire first half total in the third as they outscored Richfield 14-6 to take control of the game.

Carbon senior Keenan Hatch delivered an all-around performance as he posted 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Point guard Caleb Winfree worked as the perfect compliment to Hatch as he also scored 13 points, while handing out two assists.

While points came at a premium throughout the evening, Preston Condie was the third Carbon player to reach double figures as he ended with 10. As a team Carbon was held to just 35 shot attempts throughout the game.

The Dinos entered Wednesday night’s contest with a 3-1 record in Region 12 play, looking to rebound from a loss this past Friday to Grand. Richfield entered with an identical record, adding to the importance of the outcome.

Carbon received some unexpected help Wednesday night as the San Juan Broncos defeated the Grand Red Devils 76-60 in Blanding. The loss for Grand places Carbon in a first place tie at 4-1, while Richfield sits in third at 3-2.

The second go-around of Region 12 play will begin Friday night as the Dinos travel on the road to meet the South Sevier Rams. Carbon won the first meeting between the two teams 73-61 back on Jan. 8.
