
The two-time defending 3A State Champion Carbon Lady Dinos remained unbeaten against in classification competition as they clinched the Region 12 championship Thursday afternoon at the Desert Wave Pool in Price.
Welcoming in six other schools from around the state to compete in the regular season finale, the Lady Dinos once again used their stellar depth to top the field. Winning just two events outright, Carbon managed to comfortably defeat second place Emery 503-462.
The Richfield Wildcats ended in a distant third as they gathered 332 points. Grand and Gunnison rounded out the top five, while South Sevier and North Sevier finished sixth and seventh.
The Lady Dinos earned their first win of the afternoon in the 200 yard medley relay. Nicole Swasey, Tyrca Jaramillo, Sofia Crompton and Alyssa Chamberlain finished in 2:03.06. Dropping 1.57 seconds off of their best time of the season, the group of girls defeated second place Emery by over 14 seconds.
Carbon’s second event win came in the 50 yard free, where the girl’s thoroughly dominated, securing the top four spots. Thalyn Lyman just defeated teammate Alyssa Chamberlain with a time of 26.81, compared to 27.45. Crompton and Haylie Powell finished behind in third and fourth respectively.
Carbon’s depth scoring would again come into play as Jaramillo and Swasey ended second and third in the 100 yard breaststroke. The final point addition came in the 400 yard free relay as Chamberlain, Lyman, Haylie Powell and Hadley Bower shaved 6.17 seconds off their best time for a third place nod.
The Carbon boy’s team ended the Region Championship with a fourth place finish overall after gathering 303 points. Richfield took the top spot with 427, followed by Emery and Grand. Gunnison, South Sevier and North Sevier completed the field of seven.
Camden Chamberlain easily topped Richfield’s Braxten Anderson for first place in the 200 yard free. Chamberlain dropped 1.84 seconds off of his best time, finishing in 1:59. 89. Carbon’s Boyd Bradford finished third in the same event, ending in 2:06. 97.
Sophomore Gabe Ibanez won the 100 yard fly, breaking a 16-year-old school record in the process. Ibanez shaved 0.69 seconds off of his personal best to finish with a time of 59.52, breaking the previous record, held by Thomas Peterson, of 59.64.
With Thursday’s Region 12 Championship now in the books, the Dinos will shift their focus to the 3A State Championship, which will take place Feb. 12 and 13 at Brigham Young University in Provo.
