Sofia Mercedes Chimaras Maury passed away peacefully at 66 years old on Saturday, January 30th, 2021 in Castle Dale, Utah.

Sofia was born into life, an artist, on February 18th, 1954, in Caracas Venezuela to Andres and Laura Chimaras. She was the seventh of eight children. She graduated from Central University of Venezuela in 1980, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Architecture.

Sofia’s greatest joy was the love of her family. She was married in 1979 to Eduardo Nuñez, a union that brought her three daughters. The family immigrated to the United States in 1991. Shortly thereafter divorced, she found herself a single mother in a new country. She was a proud single mother of her girls, her “niñitas” Andreina, Alexandra, Adriana; a devoted grandmother to two grandchildren Aiden and Emily Moyssidis. Her early life as a single mother was one of struggle providing for her children selflessly and working to become a legal citizen; a goal she accomplished in 2017. In the few moments that she could seek her own interests you could find her with her paintings, playing with her grandchildren, laughing, and always spreading love, wherever she went. She found great joy in the mountains, from ballet, classical music, art of any medium, horses, France, Greece, and the dictionary.

She also loved to travel with her family and go on long drives across the country. She ultimately settled into a comfortable home in Emery County where she was received gracefully by her community. She was a guiding light to all she encountered. She was always a support for her family, always near, always available. She was a spiritual woman, always holding a strong faith.

Sofia is survived by her children, Andy, Alex, and Adri, two grandchildren, Aiden and Emily, her sons-in-law Chris and Steven. She was a beautiful example of selflessness, always ready to help anyone in need. Her spirit lives on in all of us indelibly.
