The Carbon Lady Dinos completed yet another masterful season as they defeated the field of 19 schools to earn their third consecutive 3A State Championship Saturday afternoon at the South Davis Recreational Center in Bountiful.

Entering the final two-days of competition, the Lady Dinos were unbeaten against 3A schools throughout the season. That trend continued as they outscored second place Judge Memorial 258-228. Emery finished in third with 211 points, followed by Millard and Rowland Hall to round out the top five.

“These girls worked through all the obstacles that this year has had,” said head coach Allie Chamberlain. “They still managed to come out on top, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Carbon secured just two first place performances throughout the weekend. The first came in the 200 yard medley relay and the second in the 200 yard free style relay. For the third straight year the team relied on depth scoring throughout the 11 events.

The Lady Dinos managed to stash several points in the 50 yard free as Thalyn Lyman, Sophia Crompton and Alyssa Chamberlain all finished in the top eight. Tyrca Jaramillo and Chamberlain also finished in the top eight in the 100 yard free.

Carbon clinched the title with two top three finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke. Jaramillo finished second with a time of 1:14.14, while Nicole Swasey ended in third, one day after breaking the school record in the preliminaries.

“The determination of these girls is incredible,” said Chamberlain when asked about winning a third straight title. “The first was unexpected, but amazing winning by one point. Last year I knew we had a really good shot at it. This year we had to really fight to come out on top.”

Saturday’s State Championship win comes following a dominating performance in the Region 12 Championship to end the month of January. Despite missing two weeks of the season due to a state wide COVID-19 shutdown, the Lady Dinos never missed a beat.

On the boy’s side of the pool the Dinos accumulated 148 points, placing them fifth overall against the field of 21.

Judge Memorial claimed its first state championship in 16 years as they finished with 314 points. Union was second with 257, followed by Richfield’s 223. Grand and Carbon rounded out the top five.

Camden Chamberlain delivered two top-five finishes for the Dinos, ending fifth in both the 200 yard free and 500 yard free. Gabe Ibanez also took home fifth-place in the 500 yard free. The top finish of the afternoon came from the 400 yard relay team, who ended fourth overall with a time of 3:44.51.
