On Sunday the Utah High School Activities Association released the 1A rankings for the State Championship Tournament that will begin at home sites this weekend. Valley High School in Orderville claimed the top spot on the list while the Green River Lady Pirates landed at No. 6 and the Pinnacle Lady Panthers claimed the No.14 position.

In a season shortened by COVID at both schools, each team is ready to get back to the action after having some time off in the month of February.

The last time the Lady Pirates were on the floor was January 28 when they took apart Monticello 64-27. Green River is riding a three game winning streak and have also won seven of their last nine. Back on February 1, the announcement that schools in Green River would move to virtual learning due to the amount of COVID cases in the area was made, wiping out the next two weeks of the Pirates season. Excited to get back on the court, their first match-up will be with No. 11 Escalante (4-16) on February 27 at 1 pm in the Green River gym. The two teams met up on January 16 and the Pirates came away with the 49-42 win.

The Pinnacle Panthers are sitting on a five game losing streak heading into the State Tournament. The Panthers were also hit with the quarantine bug and have not played since a difficult 62-16 loss on the road in Wendover on February 15. In talking with Pinnacle coach Mark Stuckenschneider he stated that the final two games of both the boys and girls seasons did not take place because of restrictions.

In their first action of the tournament they will be on the road to take on the No.3 Wayne Badgers (17-5) in Bicknell at 1 pm on February 27. The last time these two teams faced each other was on the exact same day in 2020 in the opening round of the State Playoffs and Wayne won that contest 54-22.

Check back with Castle County Radio for more information on both teams as it becomes available.
