The Green River Pirates ladies basketball squad, after one of the strangest seasons in recent memory, played their opening round game of the 1A State Championship Tournament on Saturday at home. After all was said and done the No. 6 Pirates came away with the 46-33 win over the Escalante Moquis.

The Lady Pirates hadn’t played a game since January 28 when they defeated Monticello 64-27. A quarantine order that sent all schools in Green River to virtual learning on February 1, wiped out the end of the Pirates regular season, including their rivalry match-up with Pinnacle High School in Price.

Green River looked anything but rusty when they took to the court against the Moquis. Escalante would hang around through three quarters heading in to the fourth Green River held a 29-25 lead. In the final minutes of the contest the Pirates would push on, outscoring Escalante 17-8 and taking the win to advance in the playoffs.

Talynn Lovato would lead all scorers with 17 points in the win. Abby Erwin added nine and Megan Vollmer eight.

The Pirates will now head to Richfield and the Sevier Valley Center for a quarter final match-up with Wayne, the No.3 team in 1A. Wayne defeated Pinnacle in the opening round to advance.

The quarterfinal contest is scheduled for Thursday March 4. Tip-off is set for 9:10 pm.
