With Spring just around the corner, most people’s thoughts will turn to yard clean-up. And in Carbon and Emery counties, one way people use to get rid of yard waste is burning, while it is an effective way to get rid of debris there are rules that must be followed.

When first preparing to burn, you need to know when or if your city, town or county allows open burning. Also note that there is no burning of garbage, trash or other waste.

In Price City, there is no burning of any kind allowed according to Fire Chief Fitzgerald Petersen.

In the cities of Helper and Wellington you must apply for a burn permit through the State Department of Air Quality on their website: https://deq.utah.gov/air-quality/air-quality-permitting. Open burning in these areas does not open until March 30.

In East Carbon City, you must first call the City Offices and find out if there are any burn restrictions, if you are given the green light by the City, you then call Public Safety Dispatch at (435) 637-0890, they will issue you a permit number, once your burn is completed, you must call Dispatch and let them know that you are finished.

If you live in unincorporated areas of the county open burning runs from March 1 to May 31. If you live in these areas you must call Public Safety Dispatch and they will give you clearance to burn. From June 1 to October 31, you need to contact Jeremay Jorgensen, the Fire Warden for Carbon and Emery Counties at (435) 630-4789 for permission.

In Emery County it works the same as in Helper and Wellington City, you need to contact the state and fill out the application for a permit.

In most cases there is no fee for permits and they are good for one to three days. Take the time to follow the rules and stay safe.
