Castle Country Radio was able to speak over the telephone with Huntington City Mayor, Leonard Norton who spoke about the city installing sidewalks, the construction of the new RV park and this year’s Huntington Heritage Days celebration.
The city is wrapping up the sidewalk project that has been taking place on the south end of Main Street. “The one on south Main Street is funding is coming through city funds, we set aside funds to finish the lighting and sidewalk there from 3rd South to 4th South on the west side of the street and clean up on the east side of the street. Then we are starting to work with an engineering firm so we got some state grant money for that to finish the sidewalks around the junior high that will be about a two- or three-year project up there,” stated Mayor Norton. There is also going to be sidewalks installed by the auto dealership north of town.
Construction on the new RV Park near the softball complex is plugging along and they hope to have it opened by June of this year. “They got quite a bit of progress in, they got their cabins in, they’re putting pavilions in, they got their spaces in. We’ve done some work around it with the city putting in some curb and gutter and a little bit of sidewalk in to help beautify that area. We’re kind of excited for it to have another place for somebody to come stay and visit our area, bring camps trailers and just enjoy what we have out here,” said Mayor Norton. This is going to open up other opportunities for the city such as the possibility of a motel/hotel around the same area.
The city is planning to host their annual Heritage Days festivity this year with a change in the location where activities will take place. “We’ve decided we are going to do it and take it out to the softball complex where we can spread things out a little more to add a little better social distancing right now. We’ll have our rodeo the weekend before and it’s still a go. We’re going to have some bands coming in, I can’t tell you exactly who just yet we’re still in the works in trying to get some. But yea, we’re really excited for it,” explained Mayor Norton. The city hopes that with the bigger venue will attract more vendors to come in to be a part of the city’s celebration.
