For the first time in nearly a year the Carbon Dinos took the field as they played host to the Payson Lions in the season opener Tuesday afternoon at home.
Despite jumping out to an early 3-0 lead heading into the third frame, the Dinos were unable to hold off a late run by the Lions in an eventual 4-3 setback.
Base runners and opportunities were not an issue for Carbon as they proved early that they could hit the 5A Payson squad. Ending the game with 11 hits compared to five for the Lions, the Dinos left 12 base runners stranded.
Kade Dimick used a solo home run to bolster the Carbon offense early. Ending 2-4 at the plate, Dimick was one of three Carbon players to finish with multiple hits.
Jacob Vasquez reached safely in all three plate appearances as he produced a 3-3 outing. Derick Robinson also singled twice in a 2-4 effort. Rylan Hart, Jordan Fossat and Dimick each logged one RBI in the setback.
Carbon utilized four pitchers in the season opener, starting with Wyatt Falk who went three full innings. Striking out six batters Falk allowed just one hit during the outing. The mound was shared by three others over the final four frames as Fossat, Hart and Cayden Steele also received time for the Dinos.
Held scoreless for the first four innings of the game, Payson reach home plate in the top of the fifth inning. Down to their final three outs they managed to score three more in the eventual win.
Taking advantage of four Carbon errors, Payson ended with just two RBIs for the game.
Up next for the Dinos will be the first road game of the new campaign as Carbon travels to meet the Summit Academy Bears. The team will then take Friday off before returning home to face Bountiful on Saturday.
