The Carbon Dinos notched their first victory of the season as they topped the Summit Academy Bears 5-2 in six innings Thursday afternoon in Bluffdale.
Fighting the cold, early spring temperatures, the Dinos scored three runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. Holding a slim 3-2 lead entering the sixth, Carbon added two more runs to put the game out of reach.
“We are doing a good job of getting base runners on, just not the best job of bringing them home,” said manager Jeff Cisneros. “We’ve got guys that are getting on base and drawing walks, which is a positive early in the season.”
Brayton Nielsen recorded two of the team’s six hits as he finished 2-2 with two singles and a run. The remaining four hits were spread out among four other players.
Keaton Rich ended the day 1-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Rich recorded the only extra base hit of the game as he doubled. Jordan Wright, Wyatt Falk and Derick Robison each finished with one single.
Defensively Carbon used a total of three pitchers, similar to the first outing against Payson on Tuesday. Jordan Wright delivered three innings, allowing three hits while striking out one batter. Kade Dimick struck out three over two innings, while Rylan Hart fanned one batter in one inning.
“We are going to stay to a max of 60 pitches for our guys until region play begins,” said Cisneros. “We are giving guys a lot of looks on the mound and strengthening arms. I don’t have a starting rotation lined up, so we are looking to see who is comfortable in certain situations.”
Now 1-1 on the young season, the Dinos were set to take on Bountiful on Saturday afternoon at home. Due to inclement weather that game will more than likely be rescheduled for April 10.
That would mean the next scheduled game for the Dinos is set for Tuesday, March 16 against 4A Cedar. The week of games will also include a trip to Grantsville on Wednesday and a Friday meeting with 6A Timpview.
