The Emery boy’s soccer squad started their season on March 8 with a 3-2 victory against Gunnison Valley. The rest of their week would include games against Richfield, Union, Pine View and Morgan. After the match-up with Morgan they hold a 2-2-1 record early in the 2021 campaign.
With 12 seniors on this year’s team expectations are high in Castle Dale. “ I’m very excited, trying to get all the cogs on the wheel running together so they’re not grinding and smoothly turning, I use that analogy with them regularly, and once it happens there is going to be really great games, I’m really expecting great things from these guys this year”, said coach Troy Winter, in a recent interview on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports.
In their first region match of the season the Spartans faced off against the Richfield Wildcats on the road.
The game started out pretty quietly for the Spartans as they allowed the Wildcats to score one goal in the first half. In the second half the Spartans would find offense scoring two goals and allowing Richfield to score as well would put the game into a 2-2 tie in double overtime.
Beau Cook and Jesus Ayulla each scored a goal for the Spartans.
After the game with Richfield the Spartans headed south for a tournament in St. George playing three games in two days the first of which was against Union from Roosevelt.
Scoring two goals in the first half and two more in the second, the Spartans would go on to take the win in the match 4-3 with three Spartans scoring a goal each.
Up next was the Pine View Panthers a 4A squad from St. George. The Spartans couldn’t find their offense in the contest and would fall in their last game on Friday 2-0.
They would face the Morgan Trojans in their game Saturday and the Trojans came to play scoring three goals in each half and taking the 6-0 win.
This week they will face off with the South Sevier Rams in Monroe on Tuesday, they will then travel to Price for a meeting with Carbon on Thursday. The contest in Price will begin at 4 pm.
