There is always something fun and exciting taking place in Helper so Castle Country Radio caught up with Mayor Lenise Peterman to find out what is happening. She was able to talk about Helper being named Tree City U.S.A, the upcoming Spring Spectacular, and the return of First Friday events.
“So the Arbor Foundation sponsors a Tree City program which is just essentially how you are reacting to your environment, specifically trees, care for them, and just different criteria associated with that. So we were pleased to receive Tree City certification for our second year running,” said Mayor Peterman. City Officials will continue to work with the Arbor Foundation to host some fun Arbor Day activities city wide for community residents to enjoy.
The city along with some of the business owners are hosting a Spring Spectacular on Saturday, April 10 to celebrate the re-opening of Main Street. “We’re going to block off Main Street from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm so that people can properly social distance but walk around Main Street without worrying about vehicles and other things. Visit all the galleries, and stores so everyone is going to come back online the tenth. Its just kind of a welcome back,” explained Mayor Peterman. This is going to be a great event for folks to come familiarize themselves with the downtown area in Helper.
“In conjunction with that all of the work that we’ve been doing on the Rio Theatre, which included funding that we received to the tune of $50,000.00 to do sound and facility upgrades should be complete by that time. So we are going to stage some tours, we’ll announce times later, and have people come into the Rio and experience the new sound and lighting systems that we have been able to put in with all of this generous funding,” stated Mayor Peterman. The city is looking forward to bringing in performers on a regular basis as they are working closely with Westcoast Show Support.
Starting in May the city’s First Friday events will commence once again. “May 7 should be the kick-off of First Fridays again. Ashley Hardy continues to lead that effort in conjunction with several of the business owners on Main Street. So we’re looking at having a Beer Garden for Cinco De Mayo. They appeared before council and that was approved, they’ll of course have to go through the DABC steps to secure final approval but we’re super excited,” said Mayor Peterman. Further details about the event and activities will come as it gets closer to May.
