Wellington Elementary is full of fun activities and events for their students and one of those events is the March Madness Reading Tournament.  Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Principal Paulie Vogrinec to talk about the tournament, as well as a library grant and the 100 days of school celebration.

“So every week the kids get a bookmark that they track their reading. Then next week they turn that bookmark in and get a new one. They are competing class for class with reading minutes and so right as you go into the cafeteria there’s a bulletin board with basketball hoops and it says how many minutes each class has so they get pretty excited to see if their class is the class that’s in the lead for reading minutes,” explained Principal Vogrinec. This tournament really helps students focus on their reading skills and have fun while doing it, this tournament will be held for the entire month of March.

The library recently received a grant to purchase new books for the school’s library. “Mrs. Trujillo came to me and she’s new this year, as well as I am, she came from a different school and she said that our school did this grant last year and got this money can we do it? And I said well yea sure. So she filled it all out. I don’t really think I had to do anything but just say yea, go ahead and do it. She came in the other day and told me she got the grant. There is a specific type of books that they have to order and different things. So she gets to order $3,000.00 worth of books for our school library,” stated Principal Vogrinec. This is a great award as it will provide various books for students to enjoy while visiting the school’s library.

The school recently celebrated 100 days of school with several classes hosting several events for students. “They did a lot of different things, made things that had hundred items, counted a hundred things. I think the best one was Mrs. Penry’s kindergarten class and all the little kindergarteners, even Mrs. Penry they dressed up like they were 100 years old and they did a parade down the hall. Some of them had walkers, wigs, canes, it was just really cute, they had a really great time,” said Principal Vogrinec. Students enjoyed the activities that the school put on during this time.
