
After a two game sweep of the Cedar Reds on Thursday, the Dino Baseball squad headed a little further down the road to St. George to participate in the Desert Hills Thunder tournament. Playing three games in two days Carbon faced teams from Union, Region 12 foe Grand County and the host team Desert Hills going 1-2.
Carbon is sitting at 8-3 this season and will be starting to face more region competition in the coming weeks.
Up next for the Dinos is a road contest with Juab on Wednesday. Juab is sitting at 10-1 this season and if you go back to the 2019 season these two teams faced each other in a home and away series with Juab taking both games.
After Juab, the Dinos will be off until April 6 when they will once again be on the road to face the San Juan Broncos. They will return home on April 7 to face Gunnison Valley.
Below is a recap of the weekend’s contests:
Friday- Union- Loss 4-3
In game one the Dinos would face the Union Cougars from Roosevelt. Carbon would get on the board first on a Rylan Hart single to right field scoring Cooper Schade. In the same inning Keaton Rich would hit a single to second scoring James Castro.
In a game that would turn out to be a defensive battle Carbon would hold Union scoreless until the fifth when a Rayden Deets single would score Tyler Walker. Union would go on to tie it at two in the bottom of the seventh.
Carbon would cross the plate one more time on a Jacob Vasquez ground out to first scoring Derick Robison. Union would add two more in the bottom of the eight taking the win in extra innings.
Jacob Vasquez and Rylan Hart would each collect one RBI in the contest and Keaton Rich would get two hits.
On the mound Kade Dimick would get the start going four innings, giving up one earned run on two hits while striking out six. Keaton Rich would take the loss going 3 1/3 giving up six hits while surrendering three runs (two earned) and struck out four.
Friday- Grand- Win 6-0
In game two the Dinos would face the Grand County Red Devils. This would be the second conference team that Carbon would play this season, the Dinos have gone up against South Sevier twice already taking both contests.
Carbon would jump out to a 3-0 lead after two innings scoring runs off the bats of Kade Dimmick, Keaton Rich and Wyatt Falk. Derick Robison would bring home Falk on a single to right field and Ridge Nielsen would drive Robison in on a double later in the inning. Keaton Rich would cross the plate once more in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 6-0.
Five Dinos would collect one RBI each, with Rylan Hart and Keaton Rich each registering two hits. Rich and Falk would score two runs also.
On the mound, Cooper Schade would get the start and the win, allowing no hits and no runs and striking out six. Ryaln Hart would enter in the seventh and give up one hit in the inning.
Saturday- Desert Hills- Loss 13-3
In their final game of the weekend the Dinos faced host the Desert Hills Thunder. The Thunder have an 11-1 record and play in Region 9 in the 4A class. The Thunder jumped out to a nine run lead after three innings and did not let up holding Carbon to just three runs and taking the 13-3 win in five innings.
Karson Irvin, who got the start on the mound for Desert Hills was on early, allowing just six batters in the first two innings, the Dinos had to wait until the third inning before they collected their first hit, a Jacob Vasquez single to center.
It was the top of the fifth when Carbon would break through and put runs on the board, starting with a Derick Robison single to center scoring Jordan Fossat. Later in the inning, Robison would score on a passed ball and then Vasquez would bring home Cooper Schade on a single to right to bring the score to 9-3 at the midway point of the fifth.
The Dinos would give up four runs to Desert Hills in the bottom of the fifth inning pushing the score to 13-3 and giving the Thunder the win.
Jacob Vasquez would lead the Dinos with two hits, Jordan Fossat and Derrick Robison would post one hit and one run, Cooper Shade would also score a run.
On the mound the Dinos would use four pitchers with Wyatt Falk getting the start and the loss. Falk would go 1 2/3 innings giving up seven earned runs on three hits. Jordan Fossat would come into go 2 1/3 giving up two runs on one hit and striking out two. Beau Vea would enter giving up four runs (three earned), and Rylan Hart would come into finish the game giving up one hit.
