The Emery Spartan softball team faced one of the top teams in 3A on Thursday when the Grand County Red Devils came to Castle Dale. Grand sat at 8-1 heading into the contest tied with Carbon in the loss column. The Spartans used a late inning surge to claim the 9-6 victory, solidifying the region championship for the Carbon Dinos.

Emery threw two quick runs on the board in the first with a Tylee Norton home run to left field. Later in the inning, Taleigh Price hit a fly ball to center and would reach base on an error allowing Bralin Wilde to cross the plate.

Grand made things interesting in the third with a three run shot taking a 4-2 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning Emery came roaring back scoring three runs on two doubles from the bats of Wilde and Janessa Weston,  who later scored on an error. Weston would add a two run shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth to build on the Spartan lead.

Emery held the Red Devils to just two runs in the top of the seventh inning and closed the book on their region season with the victory.

Weston went 2-of-3 for the Spartans gathering three RBIs in the process. Wilde and Norton both collected one hit while scoring two runs each.

On the mound for Emery Madisyn Childs started the game going 2 2/3 surrendering four earned runs on three hits and struck out three. Cambrie Jensen entered towards the end of the third and gave up two earned on three hits while striking out three.

The Spartan win gave the Carbon Dinos the Region 12 Championship. The Dinos finished with a 9-1 region record.

Up next for Emery is a home contest with the Duchesne Eagles on Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm in Castle Dale. The regular season comes to an end on Monday May 3, when they will travel to Gunnison to take on the Bulldogs.
