Pastor Duane Hanson was born Nov 12, 1948 in Popular, Montana and lived on the Sioux Reservation until the age of 6, after which the family moved to Chinook, Montana where he graduated from high school.  During his adolescence he loved music, fishing, and daily ice cream from the Tasty Freeze his father owned.  Out of high school, Duane joined the Navy and served four years as a corpsman in the Vietnam War. He graduated from college with a degree in construction technology engineering.  In his mid-thirties, Duane found salvation in Christ and spent the rest of his life dedicated to the Lord. He felt strongly that God’s people cannot be indifferent towards the downtrodden and started his ministry sponsoring a Hmong family from Laos.  From there Duane served two chaplainships, one at the Salt Lake City Rescue Mission, and his second at the Helper Rescue Mission.

He married his wife Joy in 1984 and became a father to her girls Amber and Sabrina. Duane became the pastor at East Carbon Community Church in 1985 and had another daughter, Bethany, in 1986.  Duane’s other accomplishments include being an integral part in bringing Christian radio to Carbon and Emery counties, three years of theological education, and being a comfort/resource to those who attended the East Carbon Community Church. He was a man of prayer, he loved sweets, he loved naps, but most of all, he loved Jesus. His family will miss his hardy laughs, silly jokes, and honest, humble approach to life.  Duane suffered from dementia over the last year, but he died peacefully at home surrounded by his family.  We would like to thank every caretaker, nurse, doctor, friend and family member that offered our family comfort or a kind word over the last two weeks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Alice Hanson; brothers, Leo and Bob Hanson. Duane is survived by his wife Joy Hanson, children; Troy Duncan, Amber Goulding (Jason), Sabrina Carter, Bethany Hanson, grandchildren; Ayden Rizzi and Karlie Goulding, and his sister DeAnne Malnaa (Monte).
