The American Legion will be hosting Memorial Day Services in all the local cemeteries on Monday, May 31 beginning at 8:00 am. Commander, David Jelin took time to stop by Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details.

“So on Memorial Day on the 31st we’re going to start in Helper at the cemetery, Mountain View Cemetery at 8:00 am, we’re going to conduct a Memorial Day Service, a complete service. Then the next one continues from Helper at 8:00 am, Price City Cemetery at 9:00 am, Price Cliffview Cemetery at 9:30 am, at 10:30 am we’ll be in Wellington City Cemetery, at 11:30 am we will be doing a joint one at East Carbon and Sunnyside, and 1:30 pm we are expanding like we did last year and going down to Green River at their Elgin Cemetery,” explained Commander Jelin. The flags that adorn the graves of the service men and women will have been placed on the graves prior to the event.

“So the flags that we put out for example we will start it Thursday the 27th at Helper at 8:00 am and Friday the 28th we’ll be having people at Price City, and Price Cliffview Cemetery, and East Carbon and Sunnyside Cemeteries also at 8:00 am to decorate those graves. Last year we put out almost 2,800 flags between Scofield – which the Leek Family does, all the way down to Green River, and the Wilder Family takes care of Wellington but combined that is over 2,800 flags,” stated Commander Jelin. There were approximately 200 flags that had to be retired due to wear and tear last year.

That is another thing that the American Legion does is they properly dispose of American Flags. “Last year, like I said I had over 200 flags were retired, that were on display and we retire them on Flag Day by city hall behind the museum in the Fire Department. So if you have flags flying at home or your business bring them out or give them to the Fire Department. The Chief there has offered a flag box and we retire them with honor. Yes, they get burned but its not that we are burning them, we’re honorable retiring them, it’s not a political display its an honorable thing to do, its in the U.S. Flag Code,” said Commander Jelin. Flag Day will be on Monday, June 14 and individuals are invited to attend the flag burning ceremony at the Fire Department on this day.

If any service men or women would like to be a part of the Memorial Day Services or assist with Flag Day may contact Commander David Jelin at (435) 650-8474 for more information.
