The Carbon Dino track team ended their historic season on May 22 at the 3A State Championships at Davis High in Kaysville.  Both the boys and girls teams claimed a Region 12 title and moved into the state tournament looking to make noise. They would each finish in the top six.

The boys would finish sixth in the state and girls fifth. When asked about the girls finish coach Jimmy Jewkes said he knew they would have a big hill to climb to take the state title.

“We knew that going in it was going to be a dog fight for second place on the girls side, and just kind of have to have everything go the right way and everything kind of lay in place. This Delta team could have beaten most 6A teams, they probably could have won the 6A title. They had girls that won almost every event.”

March 13- Grand County Invitational

The Carbon Dinos opened the track and field season with a bang as both the boys and girls team claimed the top spot at the Red Rocks Invitational against nine other schools Saturday afternoon in Moab.

Dealing with wet snow, the Lady Dinos gathered an incredible 229 points, easily defeating second place Grand who finished with 85. North Sevier finished in third with 65 points, followed by South Sevier and Emery.

Competing in 14 events throughout the day, the Lady Dinos secured first place finishes in four separate events. The majority of the points came from depth finishes in nearly every competition.

Carbon shined in the 100 meters as they ended with the top three finishes in the finals. Eminie Elliot ended at the top as she finished with a time of 13.91, just beating teammate Lyndee Mower at 13.94. Mia Crompton came in third at 14.64, giving Carbon the top three spots.

The Lady Dinos also grabbed massive points in the relay events, taking home first place in both the 4X100 and 4X400. Makenna Blanc, Paiten Thomas Haylee Prescott and Mower ended the 4X100 in 55.14. Blanc, Prescott and Thomas later joined Beverly Lancaster in the 4X400.

Prescott secured the other individual win for the Lady Dinos as she topped teammate Kinlee Lewis in the high jump. The event worked as another massive point grab for Carbon as they finished first and second.

The Carbon boys team gave the school a sweep in the first meet of the season as they gathered 112 points, topping second place Emery’s 85. Monticello, North Sevier and Grand completed the top five.

Ryker Childs was responsible for the two victories on the boy’s side of the track. Finishing the 100 meters with a time of 11.78, Childs topped Emery standout Treven Brazier’s time of 11.86. Childs later added another win the long jump.

March 20- Farm Bureau Invitational

The Carbon track and field teams hosted the Farm Bureau Invitational on Friday at the Carbon High School Track. Both teams had very strong showings with the girls claiming the top spot and the boys taking third in their classification.

Ryker Childs had a big day on the boys side for the Dinos claiming two first place finishes and one second place finish.

Childs claimed the top spot in the 100 meters with a time of 11.53 finishing just ahead of Landon Tolbert of Uintah. Another first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles came with a time of 41.71, almost a second ahead of Branon Torgerson of Ducshesne who ended with a time of 42.66. And then in the long jump he claimed second just behind Trey Briggs of Uintah.

On the girls side Haylee Prescott claimed first place over Morgan Lewis of Grand in the high jump. The team of Eminie Elliot, Makenna Blanc, Haylee Prescott and Lyndee Mower took the victory with a time of 52.13 a full two seconds ahead of Uintah’s 54.37 in the 4×100 meters.

In the 3200 meters Sophia Taylor claimed second place behind Eden Hall of Juab. Impressively the Dinos also claimed spots three through five with Ambree Jones Erin Stomness and Ellie Hanson taking the next three spots

March 27- Strata Invitational

The Carbon Lady Dino track and field team continued their dominant season taking second place at the Strata Invitational at Union High School last Friday. The girls team finished behind host school Union. Uintah ,  Juan Diego and Maeser Preparatory would round out the top five. For the men, they would finish behind Tabiona in seventh place. Union would claim first with Monticello, Duchesne, Uintah and Juan Diego making up the top five.

For the boys Kobe Cruz would claim a fifth place finish in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:28.91.   Carbon would also take a fifth place finish in the 4×400 relay turning in a time of 3:59.84. Bradley Wood claimed two top five finishes with a fourth place in the shot put and fifth in discus. And Bowden Robinson would claim fifth place in the javelin.

Friday belonged to the girls team,  with five first place finishes they put forth a great showing. Eminie Elliot would have a huge day for the Dinos. With a first place finish in the 100 meter hurdles, a fourth place finish in the long jump, she also was part of the first place 4×100 relay team along with Mackenna Blanc, Lyndee Mower and Hayley Prescott.  Prescott also claimed fifth in the 100 meters right before team mate Lyndee Mower. Mower, Prescott, Elliot and Blanc would take second place in the sprint medley behind Union with a time of 4:32.24. Kayla Lee would place third in the high jump.

The distance runners had a big day as well Beverly Lancaster claimed first place in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:51.72, Sophia Taylor finished in third and Erin Stromness in fourth. Lancaster also earned a second place finish in the 800, registering a time of 2:40.14. Dino runners went one, two and three in the 3200 meters, Sophia Taylor claimed the top spot with a time of 13:02.27, Ambree Jones was right behind her at 13:03.93, and Stromness finished with a time of 13:05.79.

April 9- San Juan County Championships

The Lady Dinos have consistently finished in the top spots all season long and San Juan would be no different scoring 276 points to claim first Manti finished in second with 173. San Juan, Monticello and Grand rounded out the remainder of the field.

The ladies claimed eight first place finishes out of the 16 events placing in at least the top five in every one. In the 100 meters Eminie Elliot would take a first place finish with a time of 13.43, teammate Lyndee Mower would cross the finish right after her at 13.51 and Mia Crompton would cross in fourth at 13.83.  Another monster finish would come in the 200 where Carbon would claim second through fourth position, Shae Nielson of San Juan would finish in first place with a time of 27.36, the Dino trio of Haylee Prescott, Mower and Crompton crossed the finish within almost one second of each other.

Relays were once again a huge opportunity for points for Carbon. In the 4×100 the relay team of Makenna Blanc, Eminie Elliot, Haylee Prescott and Lyndee Mower claimed a top finish turning in a time of 52.71. In the 4×400, Blanc and Mower would be joined by Beverly Lancaster and Mia Crompton would claim second behind Grand and the Dinos would claim another second place finish in the sprint relay.

The Lady Dinos would earn a first place finish in the high jump compliments of Haylee Prescott she would also grab the top spot in the long jump, an event in which Carbon claimed the top seven places. Miriah Salee would claim another first place in the javelin.

The boys team would also claim the top spot with 183 points followed by Moticello, Manti, San Juan and Grand.

Ryker Childs was responsible for three of the teams seven first place finishes in the 100 meter, 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Childs also claimed second in the long jump.

Other first place finishes for the Dinos were from Will Carmichael in the 200 and Easton Humes in the 800. Bradley Wood threw for the top spot in the shot put and Bowden Richardson took first in the javelin.

April 17- Uintah Invitational

The girls team has consistently finished in the top spots in meets this season. At the Uintah, they would compile 172 points well ahead of North Summit’s 90 which landed them in second. Host Unitah, Juan Diego and Maeser Prep would round out the top five.

The distance runners turned in another solid performance adding 63 points to Carbon’s total. Beverly Lancaster took the top spot in the 1600 meter with a time of 5:49.77. Sophia Taylor finished just behind in a time of 6:03.02 and Ambree Jones would finish fifth. In the 3200, Lancaster took second place 12:54.92,  seconds behind the first place finisher Elizabeth Zwahlen of North Summit. Taylor, Jones and Erin Stromness would also claim third through fifth place for Carbon. Makenna Blanc took the top spot in the 800 at 2:34.10 with Lancaster taking fourth.

In the 110 meter hurdles Eminie Elliot grabbed the top spot in a time of 18.11 with Kinlee Lewis in fourth, Lewis would also take fifth in the 300 meter hurdles as well.  In the 400 meter, the Dinos would claim fourth and fifth with Mia Crompton and Kaylie Metzger claiming those spots. Haylee Prescott took second place in the 200 meter with a time of 27.96.

In relays Carbon’s team of Blanc, Elliot, Prescott and Lyndee Mower took the top spot in the 400×100 relay with a time of 52.51. Carbon also placed fourth in the 4×400.

Haylee Prescott claimed the number one spot in the high jump and long jump, Saydee Johnson and Eminie Elliot took the second and fifth spots in the long jump respectively. In the shot put it was Kayla Lee earning a third place finish and Miriah Salee in fifth. Salee also had a top three finish in the javelin.

The Carbon boys team finished with 106 points just five behind first place Cottonwood. Monticello, San Juan and Uintah rounded out the top five.

Once again Ryker Childs would stockpile points for the Dinos with first place finishes in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles as well as the 100 meter, he also would claim second place in the long jump. Will Carmichael took the fourth place spot in the 200 meter turning in a time of 25.78 and Easton Humes’ time of 55.61 would be enough for fourth in the 400. Carbon would also earn the fourth spot in the 4×400.

Distances were kind to the boys as well with Kobe Cruz taking second in the 3200 with a time of 10:37.10, just seven seconds off of first place. Cruz would also take third in the 1600 and fifth in the 800 turning in a time of 2:15.71.

In the high jump it was Caleb Winfree finishing in the No. 2 spot and Bradley Wood earned a top three finish in the shot put.

April 20- Juab Invitational

The Dino track and field squad were back on the road on Tuesday as they headed to Nephi for the Juab Invitational. The girls continued their strong season as they claimed the top spot out of the eight teams that competed, the boys finished in third place.

The Lady Dinos would put together 123 points, claiming their fifth top finish of the season. Morgan, Manti, Juab and Richfield would round out the top five.

In the individual events Eminie Elliot took top three finishes in the 110 meter hurdles and in the long jump. In the 100 meters she took the second spot turning in a time of 13.44, Lyndee Mower would cross the finish line just after her taking third. Haylee Prescott would earn a second place finish in the 200 with a time of 27.24, Mower took the fifth spot.

In relays, Elliot, Mower, Prescott and Makenna Blanc finished the 4×200 with a time of 1:51.84. Blanc, Mower, Prescott and Beverly Lancaster finished in third in the 4×400 as well.

Distance runners would once again turn in great performance for the Dinos just as they have all season. In the 800, Makenna Blanc would claim second crossing the finish with a time of 2:34.48. Beverly Lancaster finished in fifth. Lancaster would go on to claim the second spot in the 1600 with Sophia Taylor ending in fifth. Taylor would come back to take second in the 3200, turning in a time of 12:50.12. Ambree Jones and Erin Stromness would finish fourth and fifth.

In the javelin Carbon would place three in the top five with Ashley Shorts, Salome Derviaux and Isabelle Nelson going spots two through four. Saydee Johnson would take the fourth spot in the long jump and Haylee Prescott took third in the high jump.

The Carbon boys complied 89 points, finishing in third behind first place Juab and Morgan who earned a second place finish. Richfield and Tooele rounded out the top five.

Ryker Childs who is putting together a great season, added more top finishes to the list in the 100 meter, 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles, Childs also grabbed a second place finish in the long jump.

In the 800 meter, Easton Humes finished in third. Kobe Cruz took the top spot in the 3200 with a time of 10:30.23 and Cruz and Humes would finish fourth and fifth in the 1600.

Bradley Wood grabbed a second place finish in the shot put and Bowden Robinson threw for third in the javelin.

April 23- Blue Mountain Invitational

Carbon track and field continued their winning ways last weekend in Monticello when they competed in the Blue Mountain Invitational. Both the boys and the girls teams claimed the top spots in their divisions.

The Lady Dinos tallied 247 points to take the top spot followed by Grand, San Juan, Monticello and South Sevier rounding out the top five.

Sophia Taylor led the way for the distance runners taking earning a first place finish in the 3200 meter turning in a time of 12:50.63. Ellie Hanson finished in third and Ambree Jones claimed fourth. Taylor also came in second place in the 1600 followed by fellow Dinos Erin Stromness and Hanson in third and fourth.

In the 100 meter, Eminie Elliot finished in second place with Lyndee Mower ending in third and Elizabeth Marshall crossing the line for fifth. Haylee Prescott was leader of the pack in the 200 with a time of 27.42, Mower claimed third and Paiten Thomas crossed in fifth place. Thomas also finished fourth in the 400.

Elliott was not finished as she went on to earn a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with Lindsey Jespersen claiming third and Kenidee Gunter fifth. Jespersen grabbed the second place spot in the 300 meter hurdles.

In the relays, the team of Makenna Blanc, Prescott, Mower and Elliot earned the top spot in the 4×100, Carbon also claimed second in the 4×400. The sprint relay team of Kaylie Metzger, Gunter, Marshall and Stomness finished in second.

Prescott had a good day in the field events as well with a top finish in the high jump and long jump,  Saydee Johnson finished in second place in both events. In the javelin, Miriah Salee threw for first place and Tymber Bennett third. Salee also took third in the shot put and second place in the discus. Eva Grimaldo finished third in the discus and fourth in shot put.

The Carbon boys ended the day with 171 points just four ahead host school Monticello. San Juan, Grand and South Sevier made up the rest of the top five.

The relay teams put up 26 points for the Dinos. The relay team of Nathan Hobbs, Pierce Bryner, Will Carmichael and Easton Humes claimed the top finish in the 4×400 with a time of 3:56.61. Carbon also claimed first in the 4×100 and in the sprint relay Eric Holt, Logan Palmer, Kaiden Gunter and Alvaro Zarate finished third.

Kobe Cruz took the top spot in the 3200 with a time of 10:36.51 Pierce Bryner would finish in third and Braxton Ware fourth for the Dinos. In the 1600 Cruz took second with Easton Humes in third and Ware coming in fifth. Humes would earn a second place in the 800 with Cruz ending in third and Ware in fifth.

In individual events Humes claimed a top finish in the 400 with Hobbs coming in fourth, Carmichael would take fifth in the 200. Palmer came into give the Dinos a fourth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles and Spencer Tullis claimed fifth, Palmer put forward a fifth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles as well.

Caleb Winfree competed to a third place finish in both the high jump and the long jump. Bradley Wood continued his great season throwing for third place in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Bowden Robinson earned a first place finish in the javelin.

Up next the Dinos will be hosting the Eastern Utah Championships in Price on April 30. This meet will welcome teams from all over eastern portion of the state.

April 30- Eastern Utah Championships

The Carbon High track teams welcomed schools from around the eastern portion of the state on Friday to participate in the Eastern Utah Championships in Price. With 11 schools represented the Lady Dinos grabbed the top spot and on the boys side it was Union taking first with Carbon collecting a second place finish.

The Carbon girls team earned their seventh No.1 finish this season followed by Union, Uintah, Grand and Emery. The Lady Dinos have finished no worse than second in all meets they have been a part of this year.

The distance runners set the pace once again for the Dinos with Beverly Lancaster taking first place in the 1600 meter, with a time of 5:48.47. Sophia Taylor grabbed third to continue her consistent season and Ambree Jones crossed the line in fifth. Once again in the 3200, Lancaster, Taylor, Jones and Erin Stromness would go No.2 thru No. 5, and then in the 800 it was Makenna Blanc and Lancaster going two and three.

Blanc was a part of the 4×100 relay that would take first along with team mates Eminie Elliot, Haylee Prescott and Lyndee Mower. In the 4×400 the Dinos finished fourth.

Elliot would come through for Carbon in individual events as well claiming a first place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.87, Lindsey Jespersen claimed the fifth spot. Elliot also finished fourth in the 100 Meter. Jespersen grabbed a fifth place finish in the 300 meter and Prescott ended the 200 meter with a time of 26.94 which landed her in third.

Prescott was also busy in the field events earning a first place finish in the high jump, Saydee Johnson took third. In the long jump Prescott claimed second place with Elizabeth Marshall, Elliot, and Johnson going No. 3 thru No. 5. Kayla Lee threw for first place in the shot put and Eva Grimaldo claimed third place for the Dinos in the discus, Lee would finish in fifth. Julia Shorts and Miriah Salee would throw for fourth and fifth place in the javelin.

On the boys side, the Dinos finished behind Union for second place with Uintah, Emery and Duchesne rounding out the top five. The boys team has been finishing in the top three over the last five meets.

Ryker Childs  picked up where he left off claiming first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.31. In his other events he would battle Emery’s Trevin Brazier taking second in the 100 meter with a time of 11.37 just .04 seconds behind Brazier, then in the 300 meter hurdles Childs finished in second to Brazier again, with a time of 41.58. Childs also claimed second place in the long jump.

The Dinos claimed points in relays with the team of  Ashton Ferguson, Will Carmichael, Nathan Hobbs and Caleb Winfree finishing in second place just behind Union in the 4×100. The Dinos would finish second in the 4×400.

In the distance races Easton Humes claimed a second place finish in the 1600, Kobe Cruz crossed the line right after to take third. Cruz grabbed the third place spot in the 3200 and Humes ended the 800 in fifth.

Bradley Wood continued his season of top finishes in the shot put throwing for fourth. Bowden Richardson threw to a fourth place finish in the javelin and Carson Shepard claimed a fifth place finish in the discus. Caleb Winfree grabbed fourth place in the high jump.

May 12-13- Region 12 Championships

The Carbon Track squad welcomed six other schools to Price on Wednesday and Thursday for the Region 12 championships. At the end of two days of competition the home team Carbon Dinos claimed the region crown on both the boys and girls side as they prepare to move on to the 3A State Championships.

For the boys Richfield would take the second spot followed by Emery, San Juan, Grand and South Sevier behind the first place Dinos.

Ryker Childs once again renewed his rivalry with Emery’s Trevin Brazier. The two would battle it out in three different events with Brazier getting the better of Childs but not by much. In the 110 meter hurdles, Childs finished in second place with a time of 15.10 just behind Brazier’s 14.98. Childs would claim second in the 300 hurdles turning in a time of 40.32 just short of Brazier’s 39.39, then in the 100, it was Childs coming in second just behind Brazier who cross the finish in 11.43. Childs also claimed first place in the long jump for the Dinos.

In the 400 meter Easton Humes would bring home a second place finish for the Dinos. Kobe Cruz has been putting up some good times in distances this year grabbed two third place finishes in both the 1600 and the 3200 meters as well as a fifth place in the 800.Pierce Bryner also grabbed fourth place in the 3200. Relays were another spot where Carbon earned points with a second place finish in both the sprint medley and the 4×400 and crossed the finish line in third in the 4×100.

The Dinos have had some good luck in field events this season as well. Caleb Winfree ended the day in the top spot in the high Jump and the second place spot in the long jump. Bowden Richardson threw for a first place finish in the javelin. Bradley Wood threw for second place in the shot put and finished fifth in the discus, Carson Shepard also finished in third in the discus.

The Carbon girls continued their dominance over all opponents claiming the top spot followed by Richfield, Emery, South Sevier, Grand and San Juan. The Lady Dinos claimed the their eighth top finish this season.

Distance races have been a huge point grab for the Dinos all season with a group of ladies who pace each other in every race it seems. In the 3200 meters Carbon would go spots one thru four as Beverly Lancaster, Sophia Taylor Erin Stromness and Ambree Jones would take over this race just as they have all season. Lancaster and Taylor went second and fifth in the 1600 as well and in the 800, Makenna Blanc took the second spot with Lancaster and Addie Lester taking third and fourth.

Carbon grabbed three first place finishes in the relays as well, taking the top spot in the sprint medley, the 4x 100 and the 4×400.

Shorter distances were another bright spot for the Dinos starting with the 100 meter, where Eminie Elliot, crossed the finish line with a time of 13.31 putting her in second place followed by her team mates Lyndee Mower, Lindsey Jespersen and Elizabeth Marshall. Haylee Prescott claimed a second place finish in the 200 meter, Paiten Thomas finished in fifth. Prescott also grabbed the top position in the high jump. Mia Crompton would run to a second place finish in the 400 turning in a time of 1:04.12. Elliot and Jespersen went three and four in the 110 meter hurdles and in the 300 meter hurdles Jespersen and Saydee Johnson went four and five.

Johnson would also come up big for Carbon in field events getting a second place finish in the long jump and a fifth place spot in the high jump. In the discus Eva Grimaldo and Kayla Lee threw for forth and fifth place. And Carbon claimed the fourth and fifth spots in the javelin.

May 21-22- 3A State Championships

Haylee Prescott continued her dominance as the Carbon track and field squad was in Kaysville at Davis High School for the 3A State Championships last weekend. Prescott ended the weekend on the at the top of the podium after earning a first place finish in the high jump. Both the boys and girls teams had terrific showing ending the two day competition in the top 6 out of 16 schools.

Prescott, a junior who finished the season with six top finishes in the high jump, continued her consistent performance bringing home the top spot for Carbon. She would also finish in sixth in the long jump.

In relays the team of Lyndee Mower, Eminie Elliiot, Makenna Blanc and Prescott claimed the second place spot, turning in a time of 51.05 in the 4×100 two seconds off the pace set by Delta’s 49.76. In the sprint medley Mia Crompton, Beverley Lancaster, Blanc and Mower finished in the fourth position.

Elliot crossed the finish line with a time of  16.80 for sixth place in the 100 meter hurdles and seventh in the 100 meter.  Freshman Mia Crompton ran for sixth place in the 400 meter. Lancaster, who has been a staple in distance running for Carbon all season finished in sixth place in both the 3200 and 1600 meters.

In field events senior Saydee Johnson grabbed fifth place in the long jump. Johnson has consistently finished in the top five in the long jump at every meet she has participated in this season.

Tymber Bennett threw for the eight spot in the javelin for Carbon.

For the ladies, the Dinos finished in the fifth spot. Delta, Morgan, Juab and Union made up the rest of the top 5.

Ryker Childs ended his high school track career with a second place finish in the 110 meter hurdles turning in a time of 15.36, just seconds behind Emery’s Trevin Brazier at 15.16. Childs also claimed a sixth place finish in the 100 meter and fourth in the long jump.

In individual running events, Easton Humes earned a sixth place finish in the 400 meter and eighth in the 1600 meter races. Kobe Cruz finished in seventh in the 3200 and sixth in the 1600 meters.

In relay events, Humes and Cruz along with Will Carmichael and Nathan Hobbs were part of the seventh place finish for the Dinos in the sprint medley. Caleb Winfree and Ashton Ferguson joined Carmichael and Hobbs for an eighth place finish in the 4×100 relay.

As for field events Winfree finished in third in the long jump while Bowden Robinson threw for third in the javelin and Bradley Wood finished with third in the shot put.

On the boys side of the board they finished in No. 6 spot. Morgan would take first followed by Juab, Emery, Delta and Richfield.

Coach Jewkes was asked what off-season work outs will look like for the team.

“A lot of the distance kids will jump into the cross-country program, which they’ll just jump right into cross-country and they’ll start up in June. But for me as a coach, I think the kids need a little bit of a break from your sport, so I try to encourage them to either jump into cross-country, go play football. And then we’ll pick back up in the winter time with kids that aren’t in a sport and start conditioning for track, but I think it’s important that the kids have crossover training.
