The Carbon boys tennis squad finished up their season at the 3A State Championship Tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Finishing in sixth place in the classification and earning a Region 12 crown made 2021 one of the most successful seasons in recent memory.

Below is a recap of the 2021 season:

March 18- Uintah- Loss 3-2

In the No. 1 singles match Preston Condie claimed a straight set victory 6-4 and 6-4. Jack Livingston would claim victory in his match as well in straight sets 6-2,6-2.

The Dinos are coming off a shortened shortened season where they registered a 2-2 record. The Dinos have a busy schedule ahead of them. They will open region play on April 13 on the road in San Juan. They will also travel to tournaments in St. George and Vernal in April. The region tournament will be held in Richfield this year on May 14 and then they will wrap up the season with the 3A State Tournament on May 20 in Salt lake City at Liberty Park.

Uintah @ Carbon 3-18

Carbon Loses 3-2

No. 1 Singles- Preston Condie beat Xavlon M. 6-4, 6-4

No. 2 Singles- Jack Livingston beat Tyler M 6-2, 6-2

No. 3 Singles- Jack Leonard Livingston lost to Eric W 3-6, 7-6, 0-6

No. 1 Doubles- Derrick Jorgensen/Alex Callahan lost to  Adam W and Carson C. 0-6, 1-6

No. 2 Doubles- Camden Chamberlain/Zach Gregersen lost to Logan S./Noah C 3-6, 6-7

April 9- Manti- Win 3-2

The Dino tennis squad had an amazing week on the courts participating in a pre-region tournament on Thursday and then a home meet with the Manti Templars on Friday.  After a dominant performance at the pre-regionals where they were a perfect 4-0 against the competition they then returned home to face the Templars defeating them 3-2.

At the pre-region tournament Carbon faced competition from four other teams. First up was San Juan,  the Dinos won all of their  matches going a perfect 5-0. Next up they took on the Richfield Wildcats dropping two individual matches but going on to take the overall 3-2.  They would end the day going up against South Sevier and Gunnison defeating them 4-1 and 5-0 respectively.

The Carbon singles would run the table in their matches with Manti going a perfect 3-0, in fact all three matches were straight set victories. Preston Condie, Jack Livingston and Leonard Livingston all made quick work of their competition. Condie went 6-2 and 6-2. Jack Livingston didn’t drop a game in his first set winning 6-0 and just one game in the second winning 6-1. Leonard Livingston would win his match in similar fashion 6-0 and 6-2.

On the doubles side, the team of Derrick Jorgensen and Alex Callahan suffered a straight set loss as did the team of Camden Chamberlain and Zach Gregersen.

Ahead for the Dinos this week is a road match with Maesar Prepatory Academy and home for Grand before they head south for a tournament in St. George.

April 15- Grand- Win- 5-0

The Carbon Dinos delivered a flawless performance as they earned a 5-0 victory over the Grand Red Devils Thursday afternoon in Price.

Senior Preston Condie made quick work of his opponent on the single’s side of the competition, earning a 6-3, 6-0 win. Jack Livingston also dominated his opponent as he too earned a straight sets win 6-0, 6-1.

The third singles win came as Leonard Livingston worked through an up and down battle. After winning the first set 7-6, he suffered a 0-6 defeat. The decisive set was one-sided as Livingston waltzed to a 6-1 win to claim the match.

Derrick Jorgensen and Alex Callahan managed to secure a doubles win for the Dinos in the most compelling match of the day. Needing a tie-breaker to win the first set 7-5, the duo finished off the competition in the second with a 6-4 win.

Camden Chamberlain and Zach Gregersen gave Carbon the most dominating win of the afternoon. Refusing to give up a single point, the two easily claimed a win 6-0, 6-0.

The tennis team will continue a very busy week by traveling to St. George for a weekend tournament on both Friday and Saturday. The next home meet will take place on Tuesday, April 20 against the Richfield Wildcats.

April 20- Richfield- Win 5-0

The Carbon boys tennis team are going into the final stretch of the 2021 season. With just a handful of matches left before the Region 12 Tournament on May 14, the Dinos will look for every opportunity to prepare a run to state. On Tuesday they welcomed Richfield to Price to take on the Wildcats and claimed a 5-0 victory.

Senior Preston Condie, who has been turning in solid performances all season would once again take his match in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1.  Jack Livingston also won in straight sets 7-6, 6-1 and Leonard Livingston would round out the trio of singles matches 6-3 and 7-5.

On the doubles side, the team of Derrick Jorgensen and Branden Scoville would claim victory in their match 6-2 and 6-4 and in the only match that would go three sets Camden Chamberlain and  Zach Gregersen won 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

The Dinos are on the road Thursday to face Wasatch Academy and then will head to Vernal for a weekend tournament. Carbon has a match at Gunnison on May 4 and then the final home match of the season with South Sevier will take place on May 6.

The Region 12 tournament will take place in Richfield on May 14 and the season wraps up with the State Tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City on May 20-22.

May 4- Gunnison- Win 3-2

With the tennis season winding down Carbon traveled to Gunnison on Tuesday to face the Bulldogs. With wins in both singles and doubles the Dinos picked up another victory 3-2.

In recent weeks Carbon has faced and defeated Richfield, Wasatch Academy,Union and San Juan and have posted losses to Morgan, Tooele and Uintah.

In the matches against Gunnison, Jack Livingston and Derrick Jorgensen claimed wins on the singles side and the doubles team of Leonard Livingston and Brandon Scovill grabbed a victory.

Up next for the Dinos they welcome the South Sevier Rams to Price for the final home match of the season on Thursday at 3:30.

The next three weeks will be all about season ending tournaments. On May 7 Richfield will host the JV teams from Region 12 and then the following week on May 14 they will welcome the varsity teams who will compete for a spot in the 3A State Tournament May 20-22 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

May 12- Maesar Prep- Win 5-0

Carbon Tennis headed into the final match of the regular season as they traveled to face the Maesar Prep Lions in Lindon on Wednesday.  The Dinos have had a very successful year and would continue their march towards the post season with a 5-0 victory over the Lions.

Senior Preston Condie claimed a straight set victory in his singles match 6-0, 6-2, in fact all matches against Maesar were straight set wins for the Dinos. On the doubles side, the team of Leonard Livingston and Brandon Scovill defeated the No.1 singles team for Maesar, 6-2, 6-4.

Carbon has been on a run lately with wins over Gunnison and South Sevier the last couple of weeks, added to the win on Wednesday, the Dinos are gaining momentum headed into the post season.

Carbon finished the regular season with a record of 18-7 and will look ahead to Friday when they will travel to Richfield to compete in the Region 12 Tournament.

The following week the top 3A players in the state will face off in the State Championships at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City May 20-22.

May 14- Region 12 Championships- Richfield

The Carbon tennis team took part in the Region 12 Championships in Richfield last weekend. The tournament is mainly used for seeding in the State Championships coming up at the end of this week at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The Dinos came away with three No.1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds for the end of year competition.

Carbon won the Region 12 crown posting 48 team points, 14 points ahead of second place Richfield who tallied 34. Carbon entered with an undefeated region record that gave them 12 points before they even stepped on the court, and all singles and doubles were rewarded with either a No.1 or No. 2 placement which gave Carbon a first round bye.

In the second round Preston Condie defeated Brayden Staples of South Sevier 3-6, 6-3 and 6-0. Jack Livingston and Derek Jorgensen would win their individual matches in straight sets. In doubles the teams of Leonard Livingston and Branden Scovill and Alex Callahan and Garrett Bryner would go on to win their matches in straight sets also.

In the final round Condie would drop his match to Richfield’s Tyler Saunders 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (5-7). In the other singles matches, Jack Livingston and Jorgensen both claimed three set wins. The doubles team of Leonard Livingston and Scovill beat out the team of Cameron Jensen and Spencer Jensen from San Juan in straight sets. The doubles team of Callahan and Bryner fell in defeat to Bryant Shell and Will Jackson of Gunnison.

First Singles:

Condie lost to Saunders (Richfield): 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (5-7)

Second Singles:

Jack Livingston defeated Connor Jensen (Richfield): 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1

Third Singles:

Jorgensen defeated Damon Bergfeld (South Sevier): 0-6, 6-2, 6-4

First Doubles:

Leonard Livingston/Scovill defeated Cameron Jensen and Spencer Jensen (San Juan): 6-4, 6-2

Second Doubles:

Callahan/Bryner lost to Shell/Jackson (Gunnison): 6-3, 2-6, 5-7

The Dinos will head to the State Championships with Condie entering as the No.2 seed behind Saunders. Jack Livingston (Second Singles) and Jorgensen (Third Singles) will both enter as the No. 1 seeds for Region 12. The First Doubles team of Leonard Livingston and Scovill will enter as the No. 1 Seed for region and the team of Callahan and Bryner earned the No.2 spot.

May 20-22- State Championship Tournament

The Carbon boys tennis team ended their season over the weekend at the 3A State Championships at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. After the two days of competition the Dinos ended their 2021 campaign in sixth place out of 21 schools that were present.

The Dinos are coming off of one of their best seasons in recent memory ending with the Region 12 crown and with three of Carbon’s five state participants earning a No.1 seed.

Derrick Jorgensen, Carbon’s player in third singles would advance to the semifinals. In the first round he defeated Mark Monette in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Moving into the second round, Jorgensen would claim another victory this time over Logan Madsen of Grantsville, 6-1 and 6-0. Earning a berth, in the semi-finals Jorgensen faced Dawson Jenkins of Waterford falling 6-1 and 6-1 in straight sets. Jenkins would go on to win the State championship for third singles.

In first singles Preston Condie, a No.2 seed, faced off with Parker Peterson of American Fork. The match went three sets with Condie taking the loss 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3.

Jack Livingston in No. 2 singles advanced to the second round after defeating Boden Chell of Judge Memorial, 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets. In round two he would fall to Carter Killian of Grantsville,  6-4, 5-7 and 6-1.

On the doubles side of the courts, the first doubles team of Leonard Livingston and Branden Scovill advanced from the first round defeating Brennan Riad and Rhys Runnels of Judge Memorial in three sets 3-6, 6-0 and 6-4. Moving into the next round, they were defeated by eventual State Champions Noah Edgar and Auden Bown of Rowland Hall 6-3 and 6-2.

In second doubles Alex Callahan and Garrett Bryner fell to Kacen Helston and Josh Jaggi of Morgan, 6-1 and 6-1.
