USU Eastern is hosting Drone Camp on June 22 in Carbon County, June 29 in Green River, and July 6 in Emery County. This event is opened to youth ages 13 to 18 years old with a registration cost of $100.00, unless you register by June 15 it will only cost $50.00. Instructors Spencer Whitehead and James Powell stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details.

“So the first camp kicks off June 22 through June 24 that’s at the Carbon School District Office. The second one is going to be held at Green River High School that’s June 29 through July 1. Emery High School on July 6 through July 8,” said Whitehead. Although the camp is being held at the Carbon School District Office, students who attend Pinnacle Academy School are able to attend as well. If you are a student who lives in Green River you will need to contact the High School Principal K.P. Fluckey at (435) 564-3461 if you wish to attend the camp. Lunch will be provided to all students who attend the camp.

There are many career opportunities in learning how to fly a drone. “For example, I’ve got some friends in Salt Lake County area who have been hired on at a construction company strictly to fly drones for a construction company. They take measurements. They create 3D models. They do quality inspections and it’s a huge, huge benefit to these companies where they are able to save hours upon hours of manual surveying or manually inspecting things,” said Whitehead. Drone flying is a rapidly expanding vocation that’s playing a larger role in many industries.

There will be lots of information and many activities that campers will enjoy during the three-day camp. “We’re going to introduce the student into PAR 107 to give them an introduction to it.  Once they get their PAR 107 license, they can actually fly drones for money. If you are 16 or older, you can actually get a PAR 107 license, its an actual FAA license that they are given. So we’re going to introduce them to that,” said Powell. Camp officials will also go over FAA Rules and Regulations, drone safety, and compete in team activities.
