The Helper Merchant’s 10-game winning streak to open the season was brought to an end as they suffered a 5-2 loss on the road to Springville Monday evening.
Locked in a defensive battle throughout, the Merchants held a 1-0 lead entering the fifth inning. Multiple walks and errors coupled with a timely Springville hit led to four runs. The deficit at that point became too much to overcome.
“It was a game where we saw some ups and downs,” said manager Dakota Cisneros. “We knew this was going to be a tough game because they have a great program. We had the lead late and things just kind of took a turn for the worst.”
Kade Dimick was charged with the loss on the mound despite a solid performance that included four shutout frames.
Helper captured the lead in the first inning as Wyatt Falk continued his hot streak at the plate with an RBI single scoring Colton Lowe. After that, the Merchants were held at bay by a steady Springville defense that tallied 13 strikeouts in the seven inning tilt.
“There are some things that we did in that game that we need to flip around and change the rest of the week moving forward,” said Cisneros. “We didn’t swing the bat well and you mix that with a team that’s good and doesn’t make mistakes, it’s tough to win.”
Now 10-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play, Helper will look to get back on track with two home games over a three-day span. Wednesday the Merchants will welcome in Payson for a game under the lights at 8:00 p.m.. The week of play will wrap up at home Friday against Highland, again under the lights at 8:00.
