Castle Country Radio sat down with Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood to talk about fire restrictions in unincorporated areas of the county.
“There are fire restrictions in place and they’re just going to become more astringent as the year goes on but the fourth of July is coming and I wanted to get the word out there are not going to be any fireworks allowed in the unincorporated areas of the county,” explained Sheriff Wood. Unincorporated areas include Carbonville, Spring Glen, Kenilworth, Miller Creek and Westwood area. Those residents living within city limits need to check with city officials as to what their fire restrictions are for their city.
“You know Westwood is a good example, we had a fire there early, almost burned the whole neighborhood down, earlier this year. So it’s dry it’s just bad conditions for any kind of fire,” stated Sheriff Wood. It was only on Sunday that a fire sparked up on Airport Road from shooting guns, luckily the fire was contained shortly after it was reported.
“It’s as bad as I have ever seen it so I’m begging you please no fireworks this year. The county is not going to shoot fireworks off and neither is Scofield. Neither show is going to happen just because of all the dry conditions,” said Sheriff Wood. Scofield was a difficult decision to make because their events were canceled all last year due to the pandemic but it’s more important to keep the land, city and everyone safe this year.
“I do want to thank our community as we wrap this up, just for all their support with the firefighters and the tremendous effort from the California Fire Crews that have been here. They have saved the day more than once for our mountainous areas around just because they are here right now. We really could have had some major issues and they’ve been able to handle it. But the community has been awesome to support them as well, I just want to thank everybody for that,” stated Wood.
