The Carbon County Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help harvest the community garden and Warehouse Coordinator, Ethan Staples took the time to come to Castle Country Radio to talk about all the details.
“Just a couple months ago we got started. We tilled up the ground, we put in a few plants just recently and we’re excited to see how it grows. We’re growing a lot of sweet peppers, some corn, some zucchini, potatoes – there’s a few rows of potatoes, tomatoes – those are very popular and growing very rapidly,” said Staples. The concern for the garden at this time is weeding and harvesting the area.
“We need a lot of help with weeding, and especially harvesting when the time comes. It’s a lot of work in the hot summer days, just not enough people there to do it. We are currently doing it from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, usually Tuesday through Thursday is usually when we are out there,” said Staples. If you would like to volunteer at the community garden you can make arrangements with Julie Rosier by calling (435) 613-0065.
The Carbon County Food Bank has changed its pick-up times and procedure to better accommodate those that are in need of their services. “We are no longer requiring appointments. We still need paperwork when you come in, but we don’t need appointments, we don’t need you to be scheduled to come in, you can just come on in and pick up your food. We are doing pick-ups from noon to 2:00 pm, Tuesday through Thursday and that number for that is (435) 637-9232,” explained Staples. The food bank is located at 75 East 400 South just behind the Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments building on Carbon Avenue.
