The National High School Finals Rodeo is taking place in Lincoln, Nebraska, and this year Shalako Gunter will be representing Carbon High School in the trap shooting competition when it begins July 16.
After putting in the hard work and competing all season long, Gunter was rewarded with a spot in the state finals in trap shooting, an event where you use a shot gun to shoot five moving targets in the first round. She also qualified for state in the light rifle shoot as well where participants use a .22 rifle and fire at targets that are 50 yards away while standing and kneeling. Gunter placed fourth out of 26 shooters in trap shooting and 13 out of 15 shooters in light rifle at the Utah High School Finals in Heber City on June 7.
This is the first year that Gunter has competed in any shooting events and earning a spot in the National Finals comes after a lot of hard work and determination. She feels like she still has work to do before then.
Separate from high school, she also competed in the Amateur Trap Association State Shoot , where she tied for the top spot scoring a 199 out of 200, she was the only sub-junior to reach that score. Moving into the shoot off, Gunter finished in third place out of 126 entrants.
Coming up next Friday July 9, Shalako will be raising money to fund her trip by selling snow-cones, cotton candy and popcorn from 10-4 at Party Express in the Castle Rock Shopping Center. Call Bobbi Gunter at 637-0925 for other fundraising opportunities for Shalako.
