Over the past couple months the Carbon School District has been searching for a new superintendent, well the search is over and they didn’t have to look very far. On Wednesday they announced that Mika Salas would take the helm.

Salas is a product of the Carbon District attending Sally Mauro, Helper Jr. High and Carbon High School.

She began by teaching mathematics in the district at Helper in 2002 staying in that position for eight years. She then moved to the position of math specialist for the district until 2013 when she was named principal at Helper Jr. High, and in 2018 she was named Director of Secondary Education, a position she held until Wednesday.

“I would like to extend sincere and humble appreciation for the overwhelming support I have received from the community.  I have received texts, emails and phone calls from so many people.” Salas said in a brief statement.

“I was a student at Sally Mauro, Helper Junior High, and Carbon High School. During those years my family, teachers, principals, bus drivers, friend’s parents, and community members helped me when I had nothing to offer in return. I hope to take this opportunity to continue paying it forward and I hope to provide our students with the opportunities I had.”

Salas replaces Dr. Lance Hatch who left to become the superintendent of the Iron County School District. She takes over the district as the construction at Carbon High is about to wrap up and with Helper Middle School scheduled to be completed sometime around the first of next year. The school year begins on August 18.
