Golfers from around the state traveled to the Carbon Country Club Golf Course last weekend to compete in the 2021 Basso Group Black Diamond Open. On Sunday afternoon there was a three-way tie atop the leaderboard that was settled on the first hole of a sudden death playoff.

Dexter Edwards of Soldier Hollow Golf Course, Kyler Edgehouse of Millsite and defending champion Clint Finkbiner of Carbon Country Club (CCC) all ended two days of golf tied at 140. On the first playoff hole Edwards stuck his tee shot 6 feet from the cup on No.10 and put in the putt for eagle taking the top spot in the Champion Flight Category. Derek Penman and local Joey Penovich rounded out the top five.

In “A” flight, Jordan Leonard from Millsite claimed the top position shooting a 73 on day one and a 77 on day two for a total of 150. Ron Jewkes and Freston Smith both of  CCC tied for second place with 151. Justin Higgins of Mountain View placed third with Lynden Nelson of CCC and Michael Wilson of Dinaland Golf Club making up the remainder of the top spots.

The “B” flight class was lead by Matthew Robb from the Cedar Ridge Golf Club in Cedar City turning in a 151. Timothy Deason of The Oaks and local golfer Carl Sitterud tied for second place. Tracy Howard, the course superintendent at CCC claimed third and Michael Keiser and David Johnson tied for fourth with Nicholas Katsanevas rounding out the top five.

“C” flight was won by Shannon Hiatt of CCC finished on top after a two day total of 169. Tyler Konakis, Braydon Tubbs and Brady Tubbs finished tied for second place while Jeff Westergard and Jim Dowdy finished out the top five.

Also thanks to the whole staff from Food and Beverage to Carts and Starters”, Thomas King,  course professional went on to say in a brief statement.
