There have been musical events taking place over the summer months in Helper and coming up in August is a visit from the Utah Symphony. Mayor Lenise Peterman stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about all the details.

“They are doing what they’re calling The Forever Mighty 2021 Symphony Tour and they have selected ten cities in Utah to take a travelling symphony to, and we are thrilled to be one of those cities. They’ll be here August 11, they’re bringing a portable stage which will be parked across Main Street with seating and bleachers going down Main Street so we’re thrilled to have them here,” stated Mayor Peterman. This event is free to the community but tickets must be obtained on the Utah Symphony website in order to attend. The symphony will begin their performance at 8:00 pm on Helper’s Historic Main Street.

“They’re also doing a family and kids event called Get to Know the String Quartet and that will be held at 3:00 pm at Aunt Nell’s on Main Street and this is really an opportunity for the kids to ask questions of the symphony players and have some good interaction. So we’re excited to host that as well,” explained Mayor Peterman. This is a great opportunity for families to introduce the symphony to their children.

Another wonderful opportunity the city has sought out is to be a part of is a traveling Smithsonian exhibition. “They have implemented a new program it’s called Spark! Places of Innovation and they’re looking for rural Main Streets across America to highlight in this exhibit. So we submitted an application for consideration, they will let us know this month if we indeed are one of the choices and we’re crossing our fingers,” said Mayor Peterman. The idea is to highlight rural America and what they’re doing to revitalize and reenergize their communities through their Main Streets.

The city has applied to another grant to help bring in some shade to Main Street Park. “We just submitted a grant, really literally a week ago, and we’re looking at implementing some, I would call it almost like sails, where you can put them up on posts, we can put them up and take them down so that they don’t get worn during the winter. But the idea being to create more shade around the Main Street Park and we’re hopeful that will happen and we should know in a few months if indeed we get that funding,” stated Mayor Peterman. This would be a great asset to the park as they host many events at the Main Street Park.
